Default Winefred Lake Lodge Reservations

FYI winefred lake lodge is under new ownership and it sounds like a lot of reservations made last year for this coming summer we’re lost in transition (both mine and my dads were lost).

New number for the new manager is 7808174349.

I suggest you call if you want to ensure your booking is still good.

I ran into the new ownership at the Boat and Sportsman show at their booth. If you call the new ph# they will respond to the call. They said that they will be open year around starting next winter.

Likely use this for a hunting camp, fishing will the last thing it will be used for. With an air strip nearby they will get a lot of hunters from the US, and then the fish cops can do a under cover operation.

Now it may have just been a make work project during the economic recovery but I don't know. If it was and they feel that we have recovered sufficiently it might not go ahead. Of course all of these things are political and things can change in a hurry.

Be pretty awesome if they opened up a road and day use area because I’m sure everyone’s sick of paying the troll tolls at the 2 launches . I really hope this new owner of the lodge isn’t such a pain in the ass to deal with like the old owners.

In my opinion a good road and day use area or campground would be good for about two years and then you’d see the fishing start to decline. Wouldn’t take that many extra people coming in and keeping fish over 100cm to ruin the lake.

Agreed but,,,,,,,, Would it even take two years to start declining?

Right now, the pike harvest is pretty much balanced with the current fishing pressure. Would likely need to go a tag system for pike,,,, or strictly C&R to hope to maintain current fishery if access and accommodations are improved.

I would gladly pay for boat launching then have a road in there that Lake would be doomed

Anybody who had fished either Grist or Winnifred in the late 80's and 90's can tell you that the fushing has declined on a huge scale .
At one time it was very iffy to get into there in the summer but in the last 25 years or so the fishing has taken a nose dive with the improved road .

I flew in there in 1980 was a fly-in ,I fish some of the best lakes in Northern Canada and that one back then was as good as all of the ones I worked at up north. Haven't been back since I heard it's all right now but definitely not like it was back then but then again which lake is.

Increased access would be disastrous for this area. The lake has already shown signs of decline as the access improves from all the oil and gas development. As tough as it is right now to get onto this lake that is 1/2 the fun of it.

Trapper Paul said when he went to the town meeting in lac la biche in late January that they were looking at shutting down retention for pike.

I have pictures of my dad going fishing in the 80’s there. The things they would have to do to get into that lake we’re crazy! At that time he had winches on the front and the back of his truck. They had to build temp bridges, they all carried chains. He said it was a 10-12hr drive from Edmonton. One year on the way out he bent the boat trailer tounge so bad he to cut a tree in half length wise and and sandwich the tounge between the two halces, wrapped it up real good and made the drive home! I’ll try and dig up some photos. Now he doesn’t even like driving on the lake haha, how things have changed

That's pathetic. McMahons shouldn't be allowed to run any sort of fishing or hunting lodge.. They're a disgrace to Fish & Wildlife.

New regulations are out and it looks like Paul was right. Zero retention for pike.

That is correct! Noticed it as well. Honestly I am super excited to see that regulation change, but I bet many are not. We will see how many people actually follow it now...

He is EXACTLY like his old man. Maybe this is just me being cynical, but I don't think they bought the lodge just to be in the fishing lodge business. I'd bet a lottttttttt of money they have ulterior motives to this purchase...
