Sorry for the misleading albiet arguably clever titel
Situation:
I have recently acquired a VERY NICE stock already inletted for a M-98 long action with a DBM or floor plate and with a standard contoured barrel.
As I see it I have 2 choices.
I restock an existing action...perhaps one of my Parker Hales or one of the many nice 7 and 8 MM Mausers out there or....
Finding a good used action and rebarreling it to another cal.
(saving it for later or resale is not an option...)
The question is...what to do?
I know the relative cost of just doing the swap and rebed but what would it cost to buy (for instance) a good barrel with a standard contour and twist and then the machine work to dress the bolt etc and then finally to have everything reblued to match?
Also..presented the choice... what cal would you go with?
I'm not opposed to wildcat rounds but I also don't want to have to become a machinist to roll my own or a treasure hunter to find the base components.
I'd like something fairly light and well suited for medium size game...perhaps sheep at intermediate to long distance perhaps ...500 to 700 meters....in that area.
Finally...who would you buy your barrel from and who would you have do the work?
I can do the final finish on the wood myself.
I know that people would like to know my budget on this but the reason for the question is that I'm trying to develop a budget for the project.
Ideally I'd like to stay under say...ummmm...1000 to 1500 if possible.
But...the lower the better. but if I need to dig a bit deeper... well then thats what must be done
Fact is having never had a build done...I have no idea of what the butchers bill would typically look like.
