I've always been a .308 man. I used that calibre in the army from 1974 and onwards. It's done the job of harvesting everything from coyotes with (150 gn FMJ) to Whitetail and Mule deer (155 gn hornady AMAX) . I now use .223 for coyotes. I see no reason to go to another calibre.

.243. Low recoil , accurate, fun for gopher and good for big game , just know your gun and range.
But as of late I've been bit by the flintlock bug.... (60 cal smooth bore) lots of fun

There is a lot to like about them. I've used mine for ten years and had great results.

300 WSM or 300 WM for either targets or hunting for me.
300 WSM if I have to carry it for a long time in the mountains.

Hello, I’m 63 and about 5 years ago I told my son that if I had to do it over again I’d choose a 338 Win mag. I’d have confidence using it for anything I’d ever hunt. With that being said my 7mm-08 has done everything I have ever asked it to do. Tough choice but I’d go 7mm-08 with a Partition. Stay safe everyone. Take care.

A 140 gr Partition or TSX is good medicine in a 7mm-08. If I was to change, I'd go for a .338 Federal instead of the WM. I just have a thing for that short case.....I'm still tempted to get a Federal, just because.

Hope things are good for you in PA....nice to see you drop in.

If only one gun for casual plinking , off the bench , Varmints and Big Game, make mine a modern 6.5 X 55 Swede.

Thank you for the well wishes. I have also looked at the Federal. It seems I have a weekly love affair with different cartridges as far as reading about them. A 338 Federal with a 20” barrel seems perfect. Take care. Hope all is well for everyone during this trying time. So far where I live it’s relatively quiet with the virus but our numbers infected are starting to grow countywide. My wife makes sure I don’t go anywhere. She’s the smart one in our house.

Don’t own one yet but I’ll go with my future 454 casull in a Rossi 92 with 16” stainless barrel.
45 colts for plinking and small game. Shoot 454 casull factory for moose and 45 +p colt for deer

Within reason the selection is largely moot.

46 posts and only one nod to the 30-06... interesting. Not to throw a junction in the tracks of another thread, but I think I’d go .308 or 30-06.

Well I got a BSA SHT 1915 mk1 no111...303.....no scope etc....reliable as all hell...can't take a beatin' and keep on tickin' like a Swiss watch....so when I look at all I have and the possible problems the others can give me being all modern and dressed up I believe the ol'303 gets the nod.

Oops went a little bit overboard on response as I threw in the rifle too.....so of all the calibres....maybe a 7-08.....but if a rifle is included see above.

And only a couple of posts that actually listed a caliber, the rest listed cartridges.

The title said caliber but if you read the post the OP asked for the cartridge so that is what I posted

Wink

Potato...potatoe....

7-08....284....7mm...the little bugger is unbelievable when pushing a 140gr pill for moose/elk and I am sure big bear and the 120gr pills make anything from a deer size game on down freezer wrapped meat

Oh and she acts like a magnum but gives soft kisses like a super model.....

Actually, if you read the first post,he stipulated that a person could have only one cartridge, but he specifically asked what caliber it would be. And then he himself listed a cartridge, instead of a caliber.

Pretty sure we all knew what he was asking

This is akin to asking a golfer to pick one club or a woman to pick one pair of shoes!!! That said for myself it would be a modern 6.5 x 55 like Salavee related. The velocities, accuracy, and terminal results are legendary. A close 2nd would be a 9.3 x 62 (you can walk into and out of a lot of situations with this old gal). I have soft spots for the 358win, 338federal, and 275 rigby. I have used a lot of 30cal over the years with great success, but they fall short when you take an honest look @ 6.5, 7mm, and 9.3 calibers...my .02

308 win, for all around utility. Then 7mm rem mag, for when you need a little extra!

I've been mostly a .308 win or a 45-70 guy for years. If I had only one cartridge to pick it would be the 45-70. Of course I would need at least three different rifles...
