Default Elk Load

Hi Everyone,

Any opinions on elk load? I just made 50 rounds for my 300 win mag, 165 grain Sierra Game king SBT, 77 grains of RL22, and CCI magnum primers. From what i have read most hunters use a 180 grain projectile. I know the BC is better on the larger bullet but can I get away with a 165?

No, you 're doomed to fail......pffft, yet more silly or might I say "stupid" questions. I simply gotta leave this one alone.

Ignore the above post.

Place your bullet well and the 165 GK will kill the biggest of bulls...have fun.

Default Elk load

More than enough. If this is also your deer gun, perfect choice. If you have a dedicated deer gun then step up to 180's. What terrain are you in? Bush or prairie? Would make a difference to me.

Sorry man......Friday nights are when the freaks come out

I think what gitrdun was trying to say was that the 165gr Sierra will certainly do what you need performance wise to kill elk. Despite the fact it is not deemed as a "premium" bullet....

The Sierra game king is a tried and true bullet for many both accuracy and performance is quite good.

Thanks Moo,

I am doing a back country hunt in the mountains. This is my all around hunting rifle. I have a mulley doe tag in the same zone as my elk draw.

Thanks lefty, I have had great success with Sierra's with deer. All dropped in their tracks. I just want to make sure that this load will perform out to about 500 yards.

I can't wait for next Friday nights freak show!!!!
You guys that get there early save a spot for my tent.

H J, I shoot the same bullet out of my less powerful 308 pushed by 42.8gr of H4895. Last year I shot 2 deer with this load and I always have an elk tag in my pocket. I have full confidence in this load if I do my part.

I think the point some of guys are trying to say is don't sweat the small details especially this time of year 15. grains of bullet weight will not make the difference between a kill and a lost animal. The 180 may be better suited to that chambering, especially for elk, will be fun to find a new load next year. This year focus on shooting what you have if it's accurate, have fun!!!

I also fly 165's out of my 308 Norma. Noslers though. SPANKTACULER. That being said, I'm hunting elk this year with my hotrod 25 using tsx 100's. Why? Because it's bad medicine for elk to 300 yds, my self imposed effective range.

Sorry. I am fairly new to reloading and this is my first elk. Also thought "most" guys on this forum were helpful. Guess I was right. LC and Moo thank you for your help.

What you have will work just fine. That style of bullet has killed a pile of game over the years. So for that matter has a patched round ball out of a muzzle loader and both still are killing a lot of game to this day.

That said, the new technology is pretty good and an improvement over the older bullet styles. If you have the money and the time, work up a load with the 165 Barnes TSX. It is a great all round bullet in the the 300 win mag or any of the bigger 30 caliber rounds like the 30-06, 300 Weatherby the short mags etc. You can use the Sierras for cheaper target practice and the Barnes for hunting.

I have a 300 win mag and have shot 180 gr Sierras in it since 92. It loved the then max load of 84 grs of H1000 CCI primer. I had an extreme spread in the single digits. Accuracy was uncommonly good. I have since moved to 200 gr bullets so that they don't open up quite so quickly under 100 yds. Took a muley with it using the 200 gr bullet with a frontal shot at 75 yds. Bullet entered the brisket going up slightly till it hit the bone in front shoulder, changed direction and continued all the way up to the middle of the back ruining the left shoulder and much of the left front half of the tender loin stopping just short of the skin. Large wound channel. The 180s tend to open up a bit faster than the 200s. I suspect the 165s ever more so. I would consider going to a heavier bullet.

You can kill elk with smaller bullets from slower guns.

I would worry about it...just do your part and the bullet will do its.
