Default 7-08 Rem Factory Loads for Sheep

Who has experience with the 7-08rem factory loads? I’m looking to use it for my first sheep hunt. With the ammo shortages, the selection isn’t the greatest anymore and can’t find the 120g BT so I’m looking into other bullets

Anyone have any success stories using the 7-08rem on sheep?

I have zero success stories, but Barnes makes a factory load with a 120g TTSX, that I would have to think should absolutely work.

Sheep are not any bigger then a whitetail so any good whitetail bullet should work. Buy a bunch of different loads and see which your rifle likes, then buy a bunch of the same brand and if possible same lot number ... then shoot from weird and wonderful positions both up hill and down because sheep don't live on a rifle range (not trying to be a smart arse) But your point of impact will be different and you will probably not get a nice level shot.
Have fun and good luck.

- Sightron rifle scopes, 4.5x14x42mm or 4x16x42mm
especially! with the HHR reticle. (no duplex pls.)
- older 6x fixed scopes with fine X or target dot.

I shoot very little factory ammo but the last couple of years I have bought some to shoot off and make brass as it was cheaper than empty brass. Weatherby Select is amazingly accurate, in my 257 it shoots almost as good as my hand loads at 3/8" 3 shot groups.. PPU and Sellier and Bellot have also both been very accurate in 30-06, 7x57, 7x65R, 7x57R, and 375 H&H. It all shot consistently under 1". I must say, modern factory loads shoot way better than the stuff I remember from 40 years ago. My bet is that you will easily find one that shoots good in your gun.

My kimber really likes the Hornady 150 gr ELDX. Did not enjoy the lower 139 gr projectiles that I have tried, and did not try and 120 gr. I use mine mainly for moose, so prefer the heavier 150's.

I just looked at a supplier I have used, and they have 54 boxes in stock. PM if you would like for the details.

My Montana in 7-08 like Federal premium ammo using the 140gr Nosler partitions. Worked well enough on a moose before so a sheep should be no problem.

140 gr BT federal premium seem to do quite well on sheep out of my kimber montana but haven’t been able to come across a box in 3 years now so have since switched over to handloads with 150gr eldx.

Would be my choice too. They work so well. Right now finding any good factory ammo will be the biggest challenge

Luckily I have a "few" boxes stashed away.

After seeing how plain Jane, Hornady 139’s BTSP’s do in my daughters 7-08, I’d have zero hesitation going after sheep with that same bullet.

With that said.
Finding factory fodder now a days will be your problem.

Thanks for the replies. I managed to find some Hornady interlocks so they will have to do until something happens with this ammo crises.

As Dick284 said I don’t know if there’s a better bullet than the Hornady 139 grain BTSP especially at 7mm-08 velocities. I only have my 7mm-08 for 5 years and nothing has ran very far after being shot with these, great blood trails also. Good luck on your hunt and take care.
