Default Downrigger Release for Braid

Just recently came back from BC and off to Cold Lake Sunday and was just going to go grab some more releases and more pads at the fishin' hole sale and got to thinking ……

I use 30lb braid on my trolling rods and only run a short top shot of fluoro and have always just used the "twist and wrap over" method and put the braid down into the releases and never had an issue with it popping out, despite the fact I load the rods very heavy with a bend to get a good hook set on take.

The only thing that keeps happening, and it's a minor inconvenience but still a hassle - is the pads keep popping off at some point and I'm replacing them all the time.

What other ideas do people use who run braid into a release that might work as well without this annoyance?

Or maybe a different type of release? I use the Scotty Power Grip Plus (large ones).

I run a 25' leader of 20-25# mono from the braid.
Snap the clip onto the mono and never had a problem.
You can run a longer leader if you need the lure father back.
I too found the clips to be a hassle if snapping onto the braid alone.

When using downriggers on Superior I run the Scotty Power grip and they grab braid just fine.

I have a couple Chamberlain magnetic releases but haven’t had a chance to try them yet. They might be worth a look

Ah, I got it. I lay the line once thru the pad and for instance the last full day on the water using them two weeks ago I never lost a pad. I’d say with fish action etc I used 12 or so that day? I have no secrets for them I’m not that smart, just use them out of the package.
This may be a foolish Question M but could someone be selling you knock offs?

I've run the scotty snappers and they do just fine. Maybe a dab of non permanent marine silicone on the outside of the pad/release will help hold it on, or crazy glue.

i use the scotty power grips and tie a piece of eleastic band to my line. Hook the eleastic into the clip and it holds all day long. The fish strike will break the elastic.

Scotty used to be very responsive to user queries. Maybe a note to them would bring the issue to their attention, or allow them to offer them up a solution?

I switched back to Maxima 30# mono for these reasons.

That is funny you should mention that actually ............. just bought some today, at the fishin' hole, and they are much, much tighter than the ones I got from amazon. Also seemed more "pliable"

I am seriously wondering if the amazon ones I got where fake, chinese knock offs ????? the color is a little different too. I should have studied the package a little closer but it said Scotty but now I'm not so sure.

Crazy .... I was just debating myself. That wouldn't be the first time I've heard of this happening from an Amazon product.
