Default Scopes: Leupold or Ziess

O.K fellow's here is the situation. I am looking at scoping out my Remington 700, 30-06 it is the 100th anniversary edition rifle a real beut.

By tradition I am a Leupold man they have served me well over the years but I have heard good things about the Ziess. What are the opinions in comparing the Leupold VX-II to the Ziess Conquest. Both are relatively priced. In the lower end Ziess will a person be able to tell the difference in the quality of optics ??

I find the zeiss while being a well built/functioning scope has only one drawback compared to other scopes and thats its low light performance.

I have heard great things about light gathering for the conquest. I would say it beats a vari x II Leupold anyday. Leupold has gone down hill from what I hear. Either way you can't go wrong with either and beats a bushnell.

Zeiss! And you have the option of getting the Rapid Z reticle the 600 would be perfect for the 30/06. I'm putting 4.5x14 x44 Conquest Rapid Z 800 on my new A7 in 270 short mag.

That is the first person that I have ever seen anyone post such an opinion.I have seen this topic discussed on many forums, and in almost 100% of the cases, people report that the Conquest is better than the VXIII or VX3 in low light conditions.
I myself have owned both Conquests and VXIIIs,and there is no doubt at all that the Conquest is brighter in low light conditions.I also prefer the nearly constant eye relief of the conquests over the varying eye relief of the Leupolds.

I'll add one more vote for the Conquest. Get it with the Rapid Z reticle and you won't be disappointed.

Default Leupold and Zeiss

X2
to what elkhunter11 and sheephunter said
In addition zeiss has had a much faster turn around time for
repairs and warranty, based on my own experiences only.

Thx Gentlemen I appreciate the input and I will definitely give the Ziess a very close look.

The only draw back for this rifle would be the color match. I am not sure if the Stainless of the Ziess would match up as well as the silver on the Leupold. I know,, sounds kind of fruity but hey its a sweet little gun I want to keep it looking sharp.

I have a friend who has had retina damage .
he has a Leupold on his sako, and has shot my very best scope , and one of my leupold 6.5-20's on his Tac Ops F51.
He baught a Zeiss 4-14X Conquest, and it is night and day above the Leupolds!
he stated that he can see colours through it than the never saw after his eye surgery - he also shoots the gun better than with the other scopes, even my 9-36X IOR.
And in the evening, he is still comfortable enough to shoot it very well.
FWIW My next hunting scope will likely be a Zeiss....
