Default Stock work tips?

What tools do those of you who have done a bit of stock work use? I'm going to be taking a Zastava stock and removing the large Monte Carlo that those stocks have and forming more of a straight comb stock. I have a fair amount of material to remove and was planning on using a wood file and orbital sander for the rough work and then going to one of those foam drywall sanding blocks with sandpaper wrapped over top for the finer work. I'm leaving the checkering, as poor as it is, as I don't have the time or money to invest in checkering. I will be using the typical furniture stripper for the finish.

Knock it down with a ferriers rasp, then a cabinet scraper. Should take less than 5 minutes to get to the scraper stage.

Sounds like you have it figured, see if you can find some spirit based stain, it works great and it really brings out the grain of the wood.

This stuff works great, one dab on a rag will do an entire stock!
