Default I want to buy a .308 hunting range/hunting rifle

Hey y'all,

I have just got interested in the sport of shooting and hunting and am considering buying my first rifle. From the research I have done I am leaning towards a Remington .308. So far i have been looking at the R 700 tactical, aac-sd and possibly a vtr (but not likely). I have also considered buying a Norinco M305A mostly because it is cheap.

I just wanted to get some opinions (because I know you have em') for a good solid range/hunting rifle that will last me awhile, help me take down my first deer and something I wont regret buying.

I should also mention I would like to spend less then $1000 on the rifle.

Thank you for your time,

T

look for a used rifle with a scope on it already. your money will go a lot further. most guys take very good care of their rifles. its not like your buying some beat out quad. the buy and sell right here is a great place to look ., why are you stuck on a .308 ? there are many great calibers for a beginner.

Default Rem .308

Wasn't planning on selling but I would let this one go for $1000 with the scope. The action was not blueprinted, just rebarreled to 308 win (Shilen Cromoly barrel 1-10 twist), Shilen #7 contour cut down to 22'' + brake - Good for 180 grain hunting bullets. Removed factory bolt knob and installed a Surgeon rifles bolt knob. Metal was Cerakoted, zero cant Picatinny rail and Timney trigger currently set at 3#. Older Bushnell 5-15x scope and factory stock, PM me if interested. The gun has 40 rounds down the new pipe.

The barrel is already broke in, next to no copper fouling after the first shot cleaning, it was shooting 1/2 MOA with Hornady 178 grain Amax's over IMR 4350

Too me this is fairly simple, but everyone has their preferences. I would go with a Weatherby Vangaurd 2. Guaranteed shooters, heavy enough for the range, light enough for hunting, 24" tube, and an excellent trigger, and too top it off, a quality piece.

Just add a stock and you have a pretty good little rifle. There are Remington stocks on the EE all the time.

I bought the M305 and made it more accurate with some match upgrades and USGI stock. The USGI stock was the biggest improvement in the groupings. The next thing is maybe the gas shims for a few dollars.

About 1 moa with 168 gr hand loads, reliable and not worried about scratching it when I take it out. Just bought $150 of lake city brass so I'm hoping to use this one more. Used to hit the 500M gongs before they shut them down.

PS That's is an awesome deal on a handcrafted work of art. That's a nice setup you've got to do some precision work.

There is a .308 Rem VTR in the EE. I was just eyeing it up but I don't need another bolt rifle. I should be like Bart Simpson write that down 100 times, lol.

The rifle offered here is a great deal, but if you don't decide on that. I would suggest going with a rifle with a better hunting profile. Lugging around a heavy barrel target/tactical rifle for hunting can get old fast.

Check out Savage, Weatherby, Remington, Browning, Tikka etc. Many of these brands have sporting rifles that would work as a decent range rifle too.

Thank you all for your time and advice.

I am very grateful to members such as SkytopBrewster for his offer. It looks like an excellent gun to me and would be very fortunate if we was willing to sell it.

Thank you again,

T
