Default Ideal gun for backcountry protection

Any suggestions?

I always figured a small pump shotty was the way to go, although LCC seems to think a lever-action rifle is the best bet.

What do you carry?

I like my Rem 600 350 mag. 18.5" barrel with no scope, its easy to load in a hurry just drop one in the pipe and your good to go. It fits sideways on my quad just behind the seat for easy access

I carry bear spray these days, but I am not in grizzly country.
i have a friend whose doughter turned a grizzly a few years back with spray, she got tangled up in a blow down and broke her collar bone, but she was able to put the run on the grizz.
I used to use a SXS Savage.stevens 311 with 18" barrels when I had to go into the bottoms after blacks however.
A mare's leg with a holster would be cool, however!

You should apply for a permint to carry a handgun go out and get killed buy a bear. Your family could then sue the Governent it would be doing your fellow sportsmen a favour.

.22 is all that you need to take out a kneecap. Just kidding, I pack a 45/70 usually but I always have my spray as the first line of defense.

I always have spray & Bearbangers as well, but I just figure it doesn't hurt to have backup backup... haha.

I have a 30/30 wincher lever action. Its short and easy to use in tight places. It packs a pretty good punch, its fast to reload if you need a second shot. Iron sights as well

The trick to going with someone else is to make sure you can run faster than they can , and of course, you have no issues if your buddy has a busted kneecap!!

Should the need arise, I'll trust my. 444 Marlin to get me out of such a jam. Personally, bear spray wouldn't do it because the wind has to be in your favour. A 265gr chunk of lead on the other hand speaks with authority.

How effective is a bear banger? Ever had to use one? Fired a couple behind my house, and they are loud!! I would worry about wind direction when using spray.

Default Bear spray

Had to spray a bear last season. About 7 yards. I never thought the stuff would work as well as it did. He hit the brush running pawing at his mouth and making a heck of a noise. That said. The spray was fired from under a 450 marlin. Good insurance is always a safe bet. But in this case the bear lived on and I am hear to talk about it. Win win.

It can be effective.. Good enough for me to carry around with me. Had a grizzly and 3 cubs approaching our campsite way in the bush last year.. packed away all my stuff so nothing would smell or be got into and waited until the mother was near her cubs, and when she was I fired a bearbanger Between her and I in the air.. SUPER loud, scared her but she only flinched... Did it again and all 4 of them bolted in the opposite direction.. Finished camping at the same spot in tents the rest of the weekend without a problem.

Bear spray and bear bangers are proven to be effective. I had a course from a mine camp on working in bear country, and they showed studies and videos of the effectiveness of bear bangers and spray. It was their choice of defense for their workers. However they also had a shotgun to deal with any bears that came to their garbage dump.

I worked with a guy who always took a short 12 gauge pump 870 with him when working in the bush. He also always took a box of clays and a hand thrower to ensure he was always handy with the shotgun.

for bears and hiking i have a mosin nagant ww2 bolt gun loaded warm with 200 gr sp and 220 gr roundnoses, not very accurate but can hit a 5" plate at 50 yards, its the carbine version with the bayonet. throwing the bolt is sometimes of a choir however.

my new bear gun is way more of a kicker a sxs 45-70 from baikal with duel triggers so i guess in an emergency i could pull both, but with those hornady 325s that would prob hurt.lol.had to take it to bashaw though see if pud could fix it cause it shoots bad right now, windage is good and can adjust properly but left barrell shoot s approx nine inches high at 60 yards,so clearly crappy. hopefully he can get her fixed. seems nice to handle and its lighter too.

Russian SKS 7.62X39. Dependable and durable. Plus its cheaper then wheat chaff so your not going worry if you accidently drop it in a river or down the side of a mountain.

Now there is some good advice for all, me included. I have a shorty 12 gauge pump chambered in 3inch mag with sights, with the regular stock it's legal with the pistol grip it's not by 2". In close quaters the shorter the barrel the better.

My prefferance would be my 45 ACP, however it would probably be less dangerous getting attacked by a grizz then getting caught carrying a hand gun.

I remember seeing some used at Primrose Air Weapons Range just north of Cold Lake and the bear ignored them for the most part. Was not scared at all. Eventually when one hit him directly he ran off.
