On a split stock design rifle you cant put tones of pressure but the 1907 sling has a forward loop that you slip your support arm through. You then sorta wrap your hand to apply pressure. It helps steady me quite a bit.
The other type of sling I use is a two point tactical style w elastic in the front section. When its slung around your back its tight and pulls the gun rearward into your shoulder.
With this rifle I use the 1907

I would say slinging up almost doubles my distance offhand....that's not saying much though

If I concentrate really hard I can hit most of the gophers I shoot at from 25 yds with my stock scoped ruger 10/22.
Its no fun when you get them everytime. You guys are way out of my league.

I know I used to whack gophers pretty consistently between 100-150yds with the Valmet I had, it liked Imperial hollowpoints well enough for that at the time. Thought about buying another one like that gun again a few times. Might yet.

I use to test my ammo at 25, 50, 75 and 100 yards. Not any more. I find most .22 ammo works OK out to 50 yards But it seems most brands fall apart around 75yds. or less.
I now shoot 10 shot groups at 100 yards for testing purposes, it save both time and ammo and weeds out the crap ammo in a big hurry.

I normally do 50 and 100 just to be sure. It's cheap ammo and it's still fun to shoot. Even 50 yards is a good shot with a 22, let along shooting gophers at 250+.
I have found that my one 22 shoots SK Rifle very well, just not easy to find locally. It likes the Federal Gold Medal Match as well, but that's to expensive to shoot routinely.
My semi, that is only good to about 80 yards with anything I've tried, really likes the Federal Automatch or CCI MiniMags.

My rifles like the Mini Mags as well. However cheap Winchester Target (bulk) shoots better but don't expand on gophers so I use them strictly on paper.

After that 80 yards I mentioned, the MiniMags fall apart.
The most consistent amongst any brand, going from line to line of the different ammo is the Federal. I can shoot the American Eagle all the way to the Target and my zero is normally only out by a maximum of 2 clicks on my turret. For gophers in my bolt I really like the American Eagle.

In past years I have turned std 40GR round nose into hollow points with no adverse effect on accuracy but much better terminal performance on gophers...its been a few years since I have had opportunity to shoot the little buggers but when I used to make yearly trips to the gopher patch I would use the ammo that shot best for longer range stuff and adapt it for terminal performance.
I had a aluminum block machined with a tiny drill bit inserted on a bearing so it could be chucked up in the drill press the hole in the block was just big enough to insert a 22lr and bottomed on the rim. Actually I inserted the round through a hole in some shim stock which allowed a " handle grip" to pull the round out of the jig easily, and that shim stock bottomed on the block. The bit could be set for depth of hollow point. I tested for accuracy at all ranges and found no real difference. In media I shot and recorded " explosive " action on fruits between the solids and mod hollow points..differences were drastic on impacts between the two
I could modify 500 rounds in about 45 min once I got in a rhythm with the jig...

Some ammo testing at 205 yards with the T1X. Looks promising - 1 weird flyer.

I haven't had that issue at all. All of my 9 CZ Rimfires love CCI and snuffing quite a few this year at 150+, once i got used to the range because I don't rangeshoot 22 beyond 75, it became decently regular. I only have max 9x scopes as well.
My 17hmr's only get Federal 17gr. Perform much better than the Hornady equivalents and the 20gr Hornadys were a def no go. Spent one full evening popping standers at 225+ with very minor miss numbers. Best was at 303 yds and I could have sworn he was laughing before I pulled the trigger.

CZ bolt or semi? That can play a big part with the reduced energy put down the barrel with the semi.

There's such a thing as a semi automatic rifle? Yeesh.

Lol, I started with a bolt, then went 10/22. That was a mistake. Then a Remington 597, which I actually do really like. Then I wanted a bolt action again. I still have the 597, but that’s what I loan out.

New CZ457, just starting to get it dialed in. I think straws at 100yds are still a ways off but, it's something to shoot for. IMG_1670.jpg
