Have had my 7mm stw since before it was factory loaded, same as the guy I hunt with, both of us have taken many animals, from coyotes up to moose. I asked him the other day " with all the new short mag calibers coming out would you switch to something else if you were to buy a new rifle today" he said no he'd buy the same thing knowing what he knows now. I feel the same. The only downfall is if you don't reload, the ammo can be a bit harder to get off the shelf if you live in a more remote area, and it's expensive. If for some strange reason you need ammo when on a trip you will have a hard time getting it. I was asked about what gun to buy for an all around moose and smaller gun recently. I suggested he go to the local hardware store or canadian tire "type" stores and see what ammo was there. Anything from 280 rem up will perform well, 7 mag has proven itself over and over, I like the power I get from my STW, it shoots .75 inch or less with almost anything, usually less, as does my buddies. But this is the case with most new good quality firearms. The STW is flat, but realistically how far do we shoot really? There is absolutely nothing wrong with the old standards like 300 win mag, 30-06, 280 or 7 mag, it all comes down to preference. For me, my STW has worked extremely well, I have never lost and animal in over 16 years of use with shoots between 30 and over 300 yards, nor has my friend, and there have been alot. The only other options for me if I had to pick something else would be the 300 win mag or the 300 wsm. hope this helps

Default 300 Rum

I know some of you may not like this cartridge for various reasons but I have shot the 300RUM for the lase 5 years and have been reloading for it for the last year and I absolutly love it. It is worth looking into. Shoots a 180gr bullet faster than a 270 130gr, better trajectory than a 338, and has amazing knock down power out past 500 yards if you can make that kind of shot. I shoot it out of a REM XCR RMEF, use a 165gr nosler accubond, and RL25. Average 5 shot group @ 100 yards is about 1". The gun is also very accurate with 180gr scirrico swift factory loads. This gun is an absolute canon. Will kill anything on this continent and dare I go so far to say the world if used properly. Only draw back is the kick. although after reading some of the posts, most of the calibers mentioned will also have a noticable amount of recoil. The 300RUM in my experience is very similar to the 7mmSTW just with a little more knock down power. In my opinion this would make a fantastic elk gun.
Here is some info on the ballistics.
180 Sciroco Rem- 3250fps @ muzzel, 4221ftp,Zeroed @ 100yds-500yards:.....-2.2 -8.8 -20.2 -37.1
165 Accubond 3350fps @ muzzel, 4110ftp, 1in @ 100yds-500:...... +1.0 -5.2 -15.3 -31.2
Compared to the 7mm STW
7mm STW 160 sra gk Fed- 3200fps 3638ftp, Zeroed @ 100yards..... -2.3 -8.9 -20.3 -37.1

Good luck in your search. Hope this helps some.
