Default Bowhunting for Elk?

Just wondering how many people bow hunt for elk?? I rarely see anyone in the south, chasing elk with a bow.

Just wondering.

Went out to Robb last weekend, way too hot, between 3 of us hunting different areas, never heard a bugle or saw a fresh track.

Seeing no people is the reason I bow hunt elk. That and the rush of calling them in.

Elk with a bow is what i live for!!! I havent hunted with a riffle in 15+ years.

They are already in and around the herd as of a few nights ago. These are usually the smaller bulls and Satelite right now. The big boys will be close as well. Still havent heard any really bugles just some grunts...should be any day now. Usually starting around now!

Cow calling will usually bring them in. I only bugle as a last resort.

most people don't see many bow hunters around, because we are hiden in the surrounding trying to get close to the animals! I know more people who bow hunt elk in the south then rilfe hunters, because they don't like driving around in the crowd.
If you like to hunt elk you should try it with a bow what a rush when they get in close!!!!

Default Elk Hunt

Heading out tomorrow for 3-4 days for my bull in WMU 526, I've been hunting this area for 15 years + and this is my second bull tag (draw). I got a decent 6x6 with rifle my first draw and took up bowhunting again last year, could have taken a few different cows but kept trying for the big bull with them. This year my son and a buddy are hunting with me so hopefully we can get in on them and tag one or two nice bulls.....can't wait!
Good luck to all this season.

I think I will try again with the bow next weekend. If anything it makes for great spotting for when rifle opens.

Bow hunting Elk is the most fun I have had. I only bow hunt now, and only shoot with recurves and longbows. So far it has been 1 Elk taken with a longbow at 15 yards, and 1 miss at 20 yards, with several close intense meetings but no shot oportunities.

Really? I sure as hell can't find any! That's why I never trust pictures of dead animals - they're like hockey players they're only as good as last year.

Yes it is, I think that some of the prettiest country is that road that runs straight north of Gooseberry.

I would hardly say there's "scads of elk" in the neutral hills. There's a reason why it takes 8-9 years to get a tag.

Me either, I had to drive home 3 hours, missed supper

Their in there maybe try listening at first light for bugles and checking the thicker spots where there is dead end roads. If you get some rain down there drive slow down the range roads and find where there crossing the roads, that helped me out.

For a couple years the elk pop was crazy in the N Hills..My buddy and his ranch hand killed two huge bulls with archery gear. 1 bull was in the 330-340 range..

the only population that's crazy in the Neutral's now is the bowhunter population. It wouldn't be so bad, but some of them believe a certain persons posts in the crossbow thread about how amazingly accurate these new fangled compounds are. I work with the public and have contact with a lot of landowners so I get to hear how so and so took a 70 yd shot at 7x7 bull, hit it but couldn't find it. This sort of thing is happening way to often.

HINT - don't believe the accuracy claims people. Adrenalin kills the backyard groups.

Getting the itch... took the day off to sit on stand on opening morning @ 5.30 am, fresh and ready for the monster bull that I had on my scouting camera for the last 10 months....

Just a few more days - can't wait!
