Get the Snow Blower Ready

Got the snow blower out of the shed and fired it up yesterday, forecast says possible 15 - 20 cm snow in the next 48 hrs. It's been a great fall so far but it is November in Alberta so we know it's coming, can't have deer season with no snow that's just not right.

My neighbour was asking me about snow blowers yesterday, because he is shopping to buy a new one to replace the small single stage Honda, that he has to push around, and that didn't handle the heavy snowfalls we had last winter. I showed him mine, and he saw the electric cord hanging on it, and asked if I actually use the electric starter. I told him that I don't bother. as it always starts the first pull, after it has been run for the first time each year. My blower hasn't run since last winter, but I pushed the primer bulb, put on the choke and gave it a pull. It didn't start the first pull, but it fired up on the second pull. I will have to run out to the range though, and start our blowers there, as one can be finicky the first time every year.

Warmer-than-normal or near-normal temperatures is expected in the whole of Canada this Winter. According to some forecast. Notice that there is very little blue (colder-than-normal temperatures)

That's not what I'm hearing, nor what the Farmer's Almanac is saying. The Almanac is usually in the ballpark, at least in the last 10 years I've casually read it.

I got my snowblower and shovels prepped 2 weeks ago. What I really need to do is get my snow plow hooked up to my truck and greased. It’s still at the back of the barn in storage.

I swapped mine out today. It's much quicker for me to do it, than drive to the tire shop and back, and have them do it.

Yup do the same on my wife’s jeep and one of my trucks. 30 min on the jeep and about 45 for the truck. Has saved quite a bit of money over the years as well!

I do too on my cars/small SUVs, but like a set of 275/60R16s or something on steel rims, I'll just save my back and have a pro do it instead of me on the driveway.

You should really splurge, and get her a new pair of snow boots with cleats, so she doesn't slip on the ice while shovelling.

Did the snowblower tune-up around Thanksgiving. Put fresh gas with stabilizer in the tank. It fired up this morning without issue.

Took the summer tires off and put the winters on a couple of days ago. I invite my kid over to do his at the same time. Do oil changes as well. For truck tires we have a little trick that saves back strain. We position the tire/wheel beside the hub with the holes oriented with the wheel studs. Then we slide a shovel under the tire and push down on the shovel handle to raise the tire. It takes a couple of times to get the hang of it, but once you do it works pretty slick. Waaaaay better that lifting those 18" tires off the ground and getting everything lined up with the studs.

Heavy wet stuff was a chore for the blower. Some 1 - 1 1/2 foot high snow.

Started pushing snow.

Finally all cleaned up. Snow has slowed to a trickle. Expecting a bit more today.

South of Glenmore rez, just finished 2 hrs of blowing heavy, wet snow, feels just like cement. Drifts were like 8", open areas had 4 or so.

Did 6 neighbors sidewalks and 5 driveways. So far I've used the blower more this winter than in the last 2 combined and I'm sure we're not done yet.

Can I get another lecture on global warming please.

We didn't get a lot of snow, but it was wet enough that the neighbors leaf blower was pretty much useless.

Wet stuff took me a a good 20 minutes with the shovel .

Agreed although I’m not a fan of wet heavy snow or high humidity. I find that you can’t do anything to stay warm. Cuts through whatever you’re wearing!
