Snow Goose Spread

Wanting to get into the arctic geese. Thinking of getting 30 dozen of those economy SilloSocks to start. Do you have to add in 10% blue or dark geese?

Is this a good starting point to kill some snows? Planning on stencilling some black wing tips into the socks and maybe some colour on the beak.

When you buy your Silosocks do you not have the option to add some Blues and Juvenilles. If it is an option I would add a few dozen of each.

Do not buy the economy socks to save money. Not even close to worth the time. It takes so much longer than you'd think and they end up looking substantially worse.

But yes, 30 doz socks is a good base spread.

for a bulk base spread take a look at the skyfly harvester pack. a lot more bang for your buck and you dont have to do a pile of diy to get them up and running. 30 doz is a good starting point for sure.

Thanks for the heads up on the economies those were the ones I was going to get. I will look at the sky fly harvester pack. Any other recommendations?

That pack looks good. Does it matter that the socks are headless?

I have never noticed a difference but I'm far from an expert snow goose hunter.
As you get into snow hunting you will likely end up upgrading as you go. Next year you can buy a few packs of just the heads or more headed decoys to fill in a little bit. The added bonus of the skyfly is they take up so little space which means more room for more decoys next year

I have one of the Skyfly harvester packs, can't complain about them, they are OK. I have some Whiterocks, Tanglefrees and Sillosocks, the Skyflys respond to low winds better. If you want to get some Skyflys, they'll modify the package a bit for you if you ask them to, I'd recommend 3-5 doz alert heads, pack only comes with one, and add/substitute up to 5dox feeder heads to use around the blinds. You can buy the heads separately and attach them yourself, saves a little bit. One thing with the Skyflys is I'd also recommend sharpening the stakes, takes a couple of hrs on a disc sander. I notice the Godfeather ones come with sharpened stakes, and if you want you could buy and add Skyfly feeder heads to them as well.
Sillosocks are a bit easier with hard ground than any of the glas rod dekes to put into the ground, but, that can be worked around by probing for seed holes.

Following up. Bought the sky fly harvester pack. Just assembled the feeder and sentry heads. Sentry heads go on much easier then the feeders. Bought an extra 4 dozen heads. The decoys look good and seem to function well. Would give them a good review so far.

Guys I know use a foxpro with an external speaker. Not sure which model, but they say the louder the better. I've got one of the smaller, cheap foxpros. I've never ran it with an external speaker but by itself I wouldn't think its loud enough. It also runs on AA batteries, so I don't have any input on how well it would handle an external speaker as far as battery life.

I make my own. Super easy to find an amp that handles a USB or SD card. Min 2 speakers and battery source. Cheap plastic tool case to put everything in and white horn speakers. Easy to get at surplus stores and wire it up. $250 is all in most due to quality amp

Im old school, been using the same home made ecaller for past 10-15 years. Simple car amp, garden tractor battery, 3 power horn speakers. I dont bother with the new technology, still using the old ipod wired to the amp through RCA cable.
