Default Elk wmu 416

Hey Guys,

Hope everyone is having a good season so far! I drew an elk tag in 416 and was wondering if anyone had some pointers for me looking to get out this week and start burning some boot leather.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Watch out for the buffalo. There may be a few resident elk in 416 but most come out of the park in November. And the herd that winters there the numbers are way down. Good luck could be a hard tag to fill.

That zones pretty thick, I would look for the best feed/meadows & openings. Or get up high above treeline.

That's could be a tough one but scout hard and make sure you spend time checking out the Ice Lake Fire burn which runs right through 416.
Competition won't be an issue because I believe there were only 5 tags handed out this year.
Do you have horses or are you hiking?
I will ask around as well and if I hear anything worthwhile will pass it along.

Good Luck

Wait for snow. Might catch some elk moving out of park. They usually head for JI hill. There are elk in 416 very few, not like it use to be. I have been in there almost every year hunting and haven't seen much for elk and very few signs. They seem to only move through. If you need any more intel. give me a shout

That about says it all. Could be a hard hunt, then there are river crossings to consider. It's basically horse hunt country.
