fillet knife...cutco??

so i had a ok knife from CT and lost it. I have lots of cheap crappy knives and was gunna buy a stone sharpener and try my luck. Im hoping to get whites this year to smoke and was wondering....is a cutco knife good?

i might just throw out all these cheap made in china knifes and get a good one and call it a day. i like the cutco cause it goes from 6 to 9 ". and i think it has a sharpening stone on yhe back of the sheath.....

i wanna keep price from 50 to 100 bucks....i just want a good knife and a way to sharpen it in my shack.

ive read old.posts and i think cutco is where its at. Heck maybe a electric fillet knife?

any recomendations?

I have one, the sharpening stone works in an emergency, more of a gimmick than anything. I find that my blade is soft and requires frequent sharpening. The extendible feature is my only reason I would recommend one.

A quality sharpening system is more important than the knife in my opinion

hummmm then i guess thats off the table......whats a good sharpening system? i use to have a stone from canadian tire and 3 in 1 oil....lol

I have half a dozen fillet knives. One is a cutco and it by far the best of the bunch

i just cant spend that...lol....im thinking cutco with the cutco sharpener. but 180 bucks for all of it?

now im thinking a canadian tire rapala ...the one made in fi land and a sharpining stone....lol

I have two of the cutco "Fisherman's pal" (Or something like that) fillet knives (Got both over the course of christmas one year)
I really like them. The extendable/retractable blade seems like a stupid gimmick, but it is handy to make it small for perch, and make it big for huge pike. And i like that it comes apart for cleaning.

Someone said my stuff is old school, these are my 2 fav's, the "Buck" has a 6" blade, the Marttiini is approx. 9" blade, decent quality & value for money. Got the Smith's sharpener a couple of years ago, one of the best I owned, a good & simple to use sharpener is worth every penny, if I lost it I'd go buy another tomorrow.

Another vote for the Cutco. I like the variable length, and the built in 'fish gripper' has come in handy a number of times on ling & rockfish. It does need frequent sharpening, but that also means that you can easily keep a razor sharp edge on it. It's my 'go to' fishing knife for west coast salmon.

Depends on the type of fish you catch and clean. 6"-9" and 12" fillet knives should cover the freshwater species for filleting for under $100.00,for all 3. Good sharpening steel or stone to touch them up every so often. Salt water fish is a different story. Rapala are my normal go to knives, but have a 9" Normark that never misses a fishing trip.

I was in Princess Auto a couple of days ago and saw Shimano ( I know I spelt that wrong) made fillet knives with about a 12 in blade reg priced at $9.99 on sale for $4.99.For all the walleye I fillet these days,If I had to sharpen it after every 1/2 dozen fish I would have bought that one, but I don't need one. Not that I'm cheap, but I just don't use one much anymore.

Kent of Inglewood on Whyte Avenue in Edmonton has a filleting knife that folds.

Looked pretty good for a cheap knife. 42 bucks.

I’ve been using a birch handled Rapala knife for over 25 years and it is still my go to fillet knife. I have some custom knives that cost quite a bit more and are no better than this one.

Comes down to personal preference really. I havr a cutco and im not a huge fan. But if you like the rubber handle, and the height change on the blade, and the hard carry case then it is likely the most “convenient”. Plus a good warranty.

I like a wood handle so ive done the collector addition rapalas . The 7 1/4” is pretty nice for high majority of cleaning. Ive gotten some custom knoves but i dont think you want to spend that kind of cash maybe.

Another option may be jim leech lake knife. I think thats what its called... worth a look. But its another wood handle style similar in a way to rapala.
