Default Tungsten Flashers and Trout

https://youtu.be/GOOuYPKtVys

Fishing for rainbow and brook trout using a Flasher sonar and slip float. The trout can be finicky and will often take a small presentation like a tungsten jig and small piece of night crawler or meal worm when they won't touch anything else. If you are seeing fish and they are swimming by your presentation that means they are interested in feeding but do not want what you are offering. So change up and find what they want. It is hard to beat the downsizing method to trigger activity. A jig is often the most reliable method of effectively delivering a tantalizing morsel to the strike zone. Get it in their face and slow it down. Wait for the take. It's coming!

Many guys I bump into on the ice in BC have never seen a flasher sonar or even heard of one. Guys often ask me what the red box is. I think its because they mostly sight fish. I know most of you guys in AB have at least seen a Flasher, own one or want one. Well here is that Red Box Marcum in Action with demonstration on what you see and how it helps me catch fish.

Hope you guys enjoy this video. Let me know in the comments your concerns or questions and I'll get back to you. If you have questions I can answer with future videos I always like that kind of stuff. Thanks for watching!

I got this question in a PM and I think it is a good one since I didn't explain in the video and probably a lot of people wonder the same, since I did as well before I started using it.

QUESTION:

"Brandon, what is the deal with these tungsten jigs you talk of in your videos? Why are they any different than the regular ones?"

ANSWER:

Regular jigs are made out of lead. Tungsten jigs are made out of tungsten. You can't feel a 1/32 ounce lead jig on the end of your line but you can feel every movement of a 1/32 ounce tungsten and smaller. It's 40 percent more dense than lead so drops like a rocket and keeps the line taught.

If you've never tried it get a few and give it a try. After one time I was hooked on tungsten and now I have a box full.

There's an interesting article regarding tungsten jigs in the latest In-Fisherman. From their tests, the sink rate isn't significantly different from lead, and they go through the pros and cons. From my experience, I much prefer tungsten. I notice the difference in the sink rate (whether it's a "placebo effect" or not) and I find that the quality of hooks and paint are better in most cases.

I'm also guessing that they're making tungsten for the environmental issue don't know for sure but that would be one of my guesses

I'll have to check that out. But there is no placebo effect. You most definitely do not get the same responsiveness out of lead as you do tungsten.

Tungsten has a density of 0.70 lbs/in3, which means that a cube of tungsten one inch on all sides would weigh 0.70 lbs – 1.74 times more than the same sized cube of lead.

Thats only one part of the equation.

This is then multiplied by this:
Archimedes' principle states that the upward buoyant force that is exerted on a body immersed in a fluid, whether fully or partially submerged, is equal to the weight of the fluid that the body displaces and acts in the upward direction at the center of mass of the displaced fluid.

Therefore you have something that is 1.74 times more dense so with the same weight you get a much smaller profile causing a far smaller displacement of water reducing the buoyant upward force on the jig.

So this is the more complicated reason why tungsten is superior to lead and also why you could never fish a 1/52 ounce lead jig but you can actually fish and feel a 1/52nd ounce tungsten jig on the end of the line.

I could care less about fall rates. Fall rate is not why you fish tungsten. You fish tungsten for continuous contact with a very small presentation.

Hey but I'm not the Engineer... RAVYAK (Tyler) where you at. We need your two cents on Tungsten.

Take for example this video. Catching perch in 50 feet of water with a 1/32nd ounce tungsten jig. I'd say this is impossible with a lead jig.
