Default Gun safe?

Looking for ideas on a gun cabinet, 6-8 capacity tops, to add to my current gun cabinet. I don't want anything big but I'd like something with at least 1/2hr fire rating. Would like to spend as little as possible but don't want something cheap. What's the best value for the buck you guys have found?

I just bought a first alert 14 gun case at Cosco for only 350$ seems like it's good quality and it's also fireproof.

The Costco one is great and if you wait for it to go on sale Canadian Tire has a decent Stack On that is a true safe with about the same ratings at the Costco one. Not one sale, the Costco wins on price for sure!

I guess it's not really necessary at this point to add another vote for the Costco safe.

Aside from being able to very comfortably store 8 guns (somebody let me know if you've actually managed to fit 14!), it's got some nice adjustable shelving for pistol cases or other valuables. It also includes all the hardware for bolting it to the wall or floor.

I scored mine when they had a $70 rebate. I haven't seen that price again but I still would have gladly paid full price for it.

Peavy Mart in High River has one that stores 22 guns for $749.00. I'm old school, that electronic keypad scares the heck out of me, as does the made in China label. I've pondered over it as I could use it, but electronics and China, with my babies in there?.....It just doesn't feel right.

The gun case has the electric keypad but also had a regular key for access if something went wrong With the electric key pad.

I didn't see a keyhole. I'll check it again, if it has one, then I'll buy it.

Yes, can confirm that the Costco safe has a keyhole hidden under a removable plastic cap. 3 spare keys are provided.

Maybe I'm a computer dummy, but I can't find this $350 safe on Costco's website.

I've only seen them in the store. The name is PROSPECTOR. I picked up 2 a couple years ago and put the "stack ons" in the garage to store paint in, which is about all the cheap ones are good for.
You should buy 2 or 3 Gitrdun.

Hope this isn't me high jacking the thread but I also have been pondering a larger safe for me expanding collection. I would appreciate anyone pointing me in the direction of a larger gun cabinet, preferably with a steel mesh style front and doors, so I can view my collection. Something large enough to hold approx a dozen guns, few bows, optics etc. I was thinking of adapting a tool cabinet but if there is something out there that does not need any work then much better.

I bought the 14 gun protector at Costco today for $349. There is no way that you are going to get 14 bolt action rifles with scopes on them in this safe. I put 8 in mine and it's pretty much full. For $350 it seems pretty good. Took 3 of us to get it in the basement. Glad it wasn't any heavier.

FYI Canadian tire has the 36 gun Stack On safes on for 40% off right now.

I cold use another one, but, I refuse to buy the electronic keypad. Guess I'll have to see, if I can special order something with a dial combo lock. They are around, just not too many locally.

I just picked up the $350 Costco one yesterday. Pretty impressive unit for the money. Took me a good half hour to realize the key has to be turned counter-clockwise and held in order to open the door the first time. I are smrt.

They are good value for the money but they are holding 6-7 rifles max.
This is about 10 y old Costco Protector.
Electronic pad works fine and there are keys for it just in case.

I was checking these protector's out at Costco this weekend. The show model looked rather beat up. Is the door handle secure on these safes normally? The one at Costco seemed about ready to fall off, but it was probably jimmied by every other person that walked through the store.

Are you guys saying that the keys actually open the safe? Typically on safes with electronic keypads the key is used to block access to the keypad. Say your buddy who isn't your buddy anymore had the combo so you can use the key to lock him out.

Great idea if the keys do work that way.

The key actually opens the safe. It's a backup in the event the electronics fail or the batteries die. If your friend isn't your friend, all you have to do it change the code.
