Default SpaceX Falcon Heavy launch

Today around 11:30 our time is the launch window.

3 of their Falcon boosters strapped together to launch Musk's Tesla roadster into a billion year orbit around Mars.

This is to show heavy lift capability, and research missions to the moon and Mars. SpaceX takes me back to the space race when I was a kid (Gemini and Apollo)

This'll be something. If it goes right, it'll really be something. If it goes wrong, it'll be a big boom.

http://www.spacex.com/ for the live launch, if all ducks align.

Succeed or fail, it is just another step towards another milestone that naysayers said could not be done. I know, I know ... the battery will never work during cold weather orbits (Henday) around Edmonton
Go SpaceX!

The purpose isn't to put a car in space. That's a byproduct of the test.

Yes Musk thought it'd be cool to have his car in a billion year orbit, with the car playing "Starman" by Bowie so....his soap. It has 3 cameras on it, so one should be able to look around at things as it orbits. Not a telescope, but there'll probably be interesting things to see from that vantage point. Might even inspire future scientists or entrepreneurs.

Just read a book on elon Musk, he's one determined guy. He nearly went broke several times, but kept at it and with some luck pulled it off.

Default This thread needs a conspiracy angle!!!!

Lets face it, any good Space thread has a conspiracy angle.

Truth or not, what is important is that idle people have something to dwell on to fill their otherwise boring and menial lives. SO HERE IT GOES!!!!

Its not a TESLA. Its an Interplanetary Defence Satellite. The second those Marsians start popping up from their underground bases, the particle beam weapon blasts them back to the red dirt they came from!!!!

AND, the US, Russia, China, and India are working together in total secret on it. The TESLA angle is simply a distraction so no one pays any serious attention to the pending Marsian invasion.

Lets hope those batteries last!!

It's brilliant!

He is going to win the very first 3 boobed martian chick with his fancy new car! Hopefully she doesn't eat lithium because it will be a very expensive 'lobster on the first date' sort of deal, but what a first date offering!!!

Where does the intergalactic meter maid mail his tickets to for the abandoned vehicle? I'm picturing a pile of summonses accumulating under the wiper blades as it drifts its way through infinity

Postponed until 305 PM Eastern likely due to upper level wind shear.

Throwing Teslas at approaching attacking aliens. Finally someone thought of a useful and practical cost saving application for an electric vehicle.

The car is a simulated payload as they needed to send up something of appropriate weight, nobody wants to send up a hundred million dollar satellite on a test launch of an unproven platform.

My fear is this is akin to fishing in a boat on a lake. Eventually the only other boat comes over and crashes into you.

Just wait until 2700 AD. A local cruise spaceship destined to view Saturn will crash into this Tesla killing all 20,000 tourists.

How about a free sightseeing trip for keen anti pipeline activists? Could fit in a ton of them due to all the accompanying hot air.

Change the word 'activists' in there to 'politicians' and I'll pay for enough chloroform to keep the payload steady during launch! Ahh the irony of how much carbon would be emitted during the process of removing them from our humble sphere!

The US is spying with it, Russia is trying to steal it, China is copying it, and India has the support services for it.
Can apply to the rocket or car.

In the air ... past the air... looking good so far! Boosters on the ground, shiny side up....another success for driverless technology.

That was pretty neat.

The dual booster landings were amazing. I wonder if the 3rd landed on the ship ok.

I really liked watching that, I would have missed it live had it not been for it popping up on a FB link. Its nice to get that kind of a buzz out of something happening live.

My understanding was that they were testing a reduced speed water landing, and it appears the results were promising. All in all it appears to be a large step forward for commercial space flight.

That is really cool!

You just know that there's going to be a Simpson's spoof of this - Kang will bump his spaceship into that Tesla and intergalactic war will result...

But the Simpson's are all about predictive programming...they show you things that haven't happened yet...

The launch and landings were absolutely amazing. The live feed from the 2nd stage is also pretty much bond villan stuff.

The technological leaps they have mad in 5 years is astounding. Reduced cost to orbit by a factor of 10.

Science in action. Education/knowledge/technical skill ... risk, drive, curiosity ... got to love it when a plan comes together. Who said those kids would never amount to anything?

HA! I watched it today. From merrit island! Freakin awesome. So impressive. Still miles away but the rocket’s power was easily felt. The twin outer rockets was a near-perfect return. I could not see the centre miss its drone but i was still able to hear its impact! What a day!
