Trucks

Saw in the news Suncor plans to invest in driverless trucks.

I love what tech is doing in the workplace but I don't drive.

What say you?

Automation has been around for quite some time, I am personally thrilled with the concept. Is this the people in the workplace killer that many fear?

Maybe one day I won't have to wipe my own butt.

Someone will be out of work, it's probably a bit boring but a lot of people are making a living doing it.

Heard on the news it'll cut 400jobs but I could be way off as I was also dealing with a driver that doesn't understand 4way stops...

Mechanical, instrumentation, electrical, IT, communications to name a few. If they drop the drivers they will need more technicians to maintain the technology.

They have got them already, proberly had them 12 months now, I had a chat this summer with the leader in charge, and he was generally positive, about results, 10-12% less fuel, don't need breaks, so haul 24hr's, not 21 a day, can be programed to slow down on haul roads, for water/soft spots etc, can be set up, so each truck runs a slightly different track, one tyre with different, so roads don't punch out, rut up, anywhere near as bad.
Require more maintaince, and need to be programed, higher standard of electrical maintance, more wiring and sensors. Stable reliable commutation systems, and sat coms.

May not work well on variable, conditions and variable materials, (Ie muskeg) but sure have there place for ore, or overburden.
Few more technical and trade staff required, but a lot less operators, quite a big savings in running cost a year, with 10% less fuel, greater on duty time and no operator wages.

All pretty close other than more maintenance. Different maintenance for sure but overall driverless is much easier on the truck.

They’ve been running them for quite some time already in test situations. Long enough to prove the benefits.

The Komatsu version of these is pretty cool I thought -

I read about these a while back and there was something mentioned about saving a ton of time with turnarounds, as in, they don't turn around at all. The transmission was designed for full power in forward and reverse. No human needs to be able to see "out front" so why bother having a forward and reverse.

I've probably got a bit of that sideways as it was a while back I read about it but still pretty neat technology.

Companies have to be profitable and the increase in regulatory restriction and new taxes places burdens on them that they need to look at alternatives for a positive bottom line. Increasingly it is the cost of labour and the benefit programs (union negotiated) that will be taking the hit. 400 well paying jobs gone and not all of the people laid off will have the skills to become electronics, instrumentation technicians or heavy duty mechanics. This will be a direct loss on tax base so less money for the Feds and the province of origin of these drivers.

The increase in robotics supports quality, cost savings but comes at a human cost. Look at the car assembly lines and the numbers of people that used to be employed vs now and the situations in the "car" cities (Detroit) for unemployment of the work force that used to support assembly lines. I am not sure where this is headed long term but I worry on the job losses as they are adding up. People that continue to work will end up being taxed more to support the unemployed.

Syncrude is doing a big H.E.O hiring right now, they must have a different plan for a while to come. I would really like to see the conditions the automated trucks could handle be cause the conditions at base mine change constantly as well as dump locations and new dumps popping up changing non stop . I’m curious if they could over ride the system if they die get stuck on a soft dump and a dozer has to pull it out. I really wish I could see their operation to judge it for myself.
