Default What a pain in the ..... Toe!!!

Yep a pain in the toe...I woke this morning with gout. Or maybe I should say is was pulled out of my sleep by a painful ache in my big toe about 3AM. This is the 3rd time I’ve had an attack. First time was very mild, just a dull ache in fact I wasn’t quite sure what it was, it didn’t stop me at all. But in the back of my mind I knew it was gout. Second time was a full blown gout attack I ended up at the doctor for medication. That was October 2016. Since then I’ve watched my diet and have been lucky enough to avoid another flare up. Till now! At this point I don’t know what caused the flare up.

This crap hurts!!

For those of you with gout... have your triggers changed over the years? Any home remedies that tend to help speed up the recovery from an attack?

I've been in a wheel chair with gout, it aint a joke. I tried every kind of diet modification, and ate cherries until I looked like one. Uloric 80 mg. once a day forever and ever will prevent it. There's other medications that work and are cheaper but uloric is easier on the liver.

I feel your pain. I developed gout from one of the blood pressure meds I was on. Indomethacin took care of it quite well until we discovered the cause and I switched meds. MUCH better since. Good luck to you.

My first attack was when I was 20 years old I had no idea what was happening I went from walking to crawling in intense pain. The attacks would come on sporadically sometimes 5 years apart until recently the attacks became weekly then almost daily I kept Indomethacin handy just in case.
My doctor started me on 300mg Allopurinol it took about a month for the attacks to stop and since I haven't had any. I used get gout in my toe and my ankle I have learned if I start to feel it I take the Indomethacin as soon as possible.

Default Indomethacin

The doc gave me a prescription of indomethacin as well when I had my last attack just over a year ago. I’ve carried that bottle of pills all over the countryside since then - just in case. Took a pill this morning, it may be taking the edge off but that’s about it. Second dose in a couple hours.

The last time I had the attack, the dr gave me a second drug as well as the indomethacin... I was walking within a couple hours. Can’t recall what it was... some steroid I’m sure.

In the middle of a bad flare at this moment.

Much has changed over the years. Used to be the joints in my toes. Now has moved to the side of my foot.

Can knock it out usually with a rapid response dosing of colchicine-but as stated -hard on the liver.

My triggers are not purine related-Chicken of all things-Went for wings last Wed-first time in 10 years and knew I would pay for it later.

Went to a gout specialist 6 years ago and got some great insight. Basically if I lose weight-gout-gain weight- gout. Get dehydrated-Gout. Anything that affects acid levels and hydration-Gout.

Alcohol acts as a diuretic so again affects water in body-Gout

Indocid and indomethacin trigger huge attacks for me

My doc away and I am out of colchicine so off to a local medi-clinic this morning for a fix.

Also had 2 month flare from blood pressure meds 7 years ago-Diuretics are the DEVIL for gout sufferers. Again anything that affects water in your body can precipitate Uric acid crystals out of suspension and into the joints.
Home cure-cherries never gave me benefit.

But drinking absurd quantities of water has been very helpful, but I have been slacking lately cuz I hate getting out of my warm bed

Apple Cider Vinegar (The organic stuff) taken daily seems to help me out a bit

I have been reading some people are having good relief from CBD Oil. So I got myself signed up at a local clinic and ordered some. Will post up if it makes any difference.

I just got over a really bad case....I can usually nip it in the bud if I feel it coming on and drink PURE cherry juice but this time no dice, had to go to the doc and get a prescription......OUCH....

No idea what triggered this last one.

As for CBD oil...I take it daily as pain med. didn't seem to help and coconut oil MAY ? have actually brought on this attach ?...
Wish I knew the trigger.....but no such luck and I believe the trigger varies from person to person.

Had my first bout with it in 2010 and really have to watch my red meat intake or I suffer it often and bad!! I have cut out beef and all wild red meats. I can tolerate a bit of pork occasionally. Mostly have turkey, chicken and freshwater fish now. Seafood and alcohol are out completely and I take alo-purinol to keep it under control. Doctor told me to cut out raw tomatoes and grapefruit as well. Too acidic.

Just left Medi-clinic with Colchicine prescription. Doc was stunned by gout flare on the outside side of my foot just in front of ankle.

Re-upped my Naproxen as that now is favoured over Indomethacin which I can't take.

New studies show high fiber and dairy help-but any increase in dietary fibre sends me in bad flare as it absorbs too much water If I eat high fibre I need about 12 litres of water a day to avoid a flare

I had a panic call from my brother last summer. He was on a lounge chair in his backyard with his engorged, flaming big toe elevated, waiting for a gout attack to pass, but was being terrorized by an ant. It seems the little sadist was slowly working his way up my brother's ankle, while he helplessly watched. Clearly planning on dancing a military tattoo at the summit, closer and closer to the angry balloon at the top he stomped, stopping every now and again to throw an evil sneer at my petrified sibling.

It didn't end well.

FWIW

My theory is that it is related to a reduction in muscle mass/density. A couple of ideas related to it are that it most commonly hits in the 40's and mostly men and those heavier. This is the time many men slow down, have lower testosterone levels, lose muscle tone and gain weight.

The increase in uric acid levels can be from diet, but I think if you are maintaining your muscle mass, any protein you ingest will go to maintain/repair your muscles.....unless you have become more sedentary.......which combined with a rich protein diet and your body slowing metabolizing your muscle mass creates a much higher unused uric acid level in your blood.

Since I have gotten back to daily weight training to gain muscle mass, I can drink beer, eat anything and no gout flareups.

I have an old friend who's suffered from gout for years, always got a big bottle of pills to curb the pain but he refuses to give anything up especially his whiskey, says when that big toe starts swelling and oozing acid that he would love to shoot it off...my dad had this gout problem as well, suffered forever, but luckily for me I don't have it yet at 65 knock on wood, but I feel sorry for you guys cause I know gout is awful, all the best to you.

Don't take too many of the colchicine! You will get the severe s**ts!! its the side effect but I would rather have a sore a** than gout! I have a coworker that gets gout every time I get it with in hours, it bizarre!!

back in the day (living in sask), we used to go to as many brandings as we could get to every spring......after every work day we drank at least a pail full of beer and ate a BUNCH of prairie oysters, and by the time we got all the brandings done I had gout attacks to end them all!

at the time I thought it was all worthwhile, but aging and moving to ab (no more brandings), I haven't had gout attacks since.....guess maybe there is an upside to getting older (and wiser).

I can eat anything and drink anything. Beer, red meat, pork, unhealthy amounts of bacon, whiskey, rum, gin.

All of it.

However.. if I have too much of the above, and allow myself to become dehydrated.. look out! Those work boots aren't going on the ol' foot for a few days!

I generally have a water bottle near to hand now! Hope I never have another attack again! I wouldn't wish gout on my worst enemy ('cept maybe Trudeau)!

Had gout for about a five year stretch about 9 years ago. Did a ton of research about it.
Mt Mom is a retired Pharmacist of 50 years. Avoid Colchisine. Stuffs poison.
Allopurinol/Indomethacin are your best bets.

I quit drinking completely 8 years ago. I have never had a major attack since.
Red meat , beer, mushrooms are all bad for it.

I had it so bad it put me on crutches.

An old-time remedy was to get a bee to sting you in the affected area (putting the bee in a bag around the foot and **** it off) I actually wanted to do this as it couldn't possibly hurt any worse but couldn't find any bees at the time)

The ONLY pain I ever had worse was blowing 3 discs in my lower back. But gout came close. I wanted to shoot my foot off..

Good luck with this man. I sympathize totally.

Up early for a squirt fest of great intensity.

No break in the flare yet , but not surprising as I initially waited too long before getting treatment-10 days established and the joint is on the side of the foot at the transition to my sole so every step releases more cutting crystals.

Poor mans Chemo for the foot

Nasty nasty stuff, but best available option for me. IMO

Allopurinol does work but....if you get it all the time seriously look at uloric ask your doctor about it. I haven't had an incident for several years now.

1 Uloric a day for me too!
Works great. But I still cant drink beer. One beer and it triggers it for me.
I still eat a ton of red meat (inlaws are beef farmers) Drink hard alcohol, eat what I want but not out of control and I dont get gout very often, but I drink 2-3L of water a day, everyday.
I always have Colchicene and Indomethicin on me just in case.

I first had my first flair up in my late 20s. Doc gave me indomethacin. That knocked the pain out of my toe but replaced it with a dull sickening ache in my gut. Most of the flair ups involved the big toe then the top of my foot and then ankle. Always red and a lot of heat at the site. The I started experiencing gout setting in on top of a sports injury.

For a long time I resisted full time daily medicine but gave in and went on daily Zyloprim or Allopurinol. No more flair ups, but when I tried to wean off the stuff it was not long before I paid the price. I have not tried to quit in the last 25 years but I have not experienced an attach in that time.

After I pass, I hope someone pours a whole bottle down my throat because that is the type of pain that may wake the dead.

Flare broke last night about 18 hours after taking a Tsunami of Colchicine.

Rear snorkel still gasping for breath.

Another memorable event in the books.

Hope the OP gets relief soon
