This is a Remington 788 chambered in .222 Rem (triple deuce). I purchased it at the Calgary gunshow for a mere $300.00
On the surface, it may look a bit normal. It isn't as I've pillared it with brass pillars and bedded the action full length. Then I had to customize it to my own liking. Here, I've bored out the bolt handle and brazed in a .222 Rem cartridge case head.
Then I went on to jewel (engine turning) the magazine bottom plate and the two bottom screw heads. I haven't jeweled the bolt yet, but that is next on the list time permitting. However, the 9 rear recoil lugs are lapped to the magazine for a soooo smooth bolt closure. And "NO" head spacing was not affected as I checked it all along the lapping procedure.
When I purchased it, it came with the typical thin hard plastic butt pad, if you can even call it that. It was cracked, the heel was missing. Well, the triple deuce not being a heavy recoiling caliber, I chopped the stock down and cut a new end piece from a chunk of walnut.
Not shown in my pictures is that of the muzzle which I've configured to a stepped target crown. Also, I've replaced the factory trigger with a Timney. And of course, the stock has been re-finished with a secret concoction of double boiled linseed oil and a few other ingredients. The metal was stripped down, bead blasted, parkerized and Dura-Coated matt black. Should you look closely at the bottom picture, you can see that I've added white spacer washers between the sling studs and the wood stock. I should add that this old girl is truly a contender for the title of "tack driver". Go ahead and click the images for a closer look.
