Default Shoulder mites on yotes

Have caught a bunch with shoulder mites this year anyone else seeing many? Haven't been putting them up....what's the deal with these? Does it lead to death or do they get rid of them in time?

Out of 130 yotes this year I have tossed a dozen of them. Not sure if it is mites or what but they have either no fur in spots or are just growing it back and the fur is useless.

I just started catching coyotes in the past couple of weeks that have very little underfur between the shoulders where that ridge of longer guard hair is. The long guard hair is there but no under fur. I was actually going to ask if that was common and happens at this time of year all of the time. Nice fur other than that but I've been tossing them out. I won't be snaring them for much longer I don't think, the fur is getting bad around here.

Dave Coyotes are still good all the way through into March believe it or not. The way prices are I plan on going as long as I can and shooting a few in March as well

This one will be 9 that I had with the mite issue...I found 14 in a ditch that someone threw out that all had them also, whoever threw them out had taken them in for the bounty and then discarded them in the county ditch...NICE

Maybe I just ran into a bunch that had the shoulder problem. Up until a couple of weeks ago, I hadn't had any like that and now I'm starting to catch numerous with the problem. The other day I caught a couple, one good and one with the thinning in the shoulders. I have one hanging in the shed right now that I'll post a picture of just to confirm that we are talking about the same thing. Coyotes with rubbed patches of guard hair are starting to show up as well. I don't mind thinning the coyote population, I'd just rather catch and skin as opposed to catch and toss.

Can you post a picture of one? I'm headed out to the shed and later on I'll post a picture of the one that I have. I'm just wondering if we are talking about the same issue.

Last year was my first year snaring coyotes and not knowing what I was doing I put up a couple like that. I think that I got a couple of bucks for them so it's not worth the time to put them up. I just toss them when I catch bad ones.

This is the coyote that I just tossed. When we are talking shoulder mites, is this what people are referring to?

I skin those Dave and still get decent money. That spot right there isn't that big and even if you cut it out and sewed it up it would look good.

I've had about twenty like that. It's a shame because the rest of the hide is good. Been pulling a blanket of the good portion to tan later. Think it's a common problem every year.

I'm just starting to get ones like that here. I tossed 2 like that in the past week and a few others were starting to get thin. I'll see how it goes I guess.

Yeah, if I keep catching them like that I might try a little cut and sew job on them.

Even without the cut and sew you will still get enough to make it worth it if they look like that.

I've talked to a few guys who have snared for years and they tell me that it shows up every year, some years worse than others.

Looks like shoulder mites to me. We got some down here out of the 5 or so yotes I tossed 2 had bad mange others had the mites. Just my opinion but I don't know what would happen if a human got those mites. I am already thinning up top I don't need to thin anymore.

I've caught a few myself. Had a fish & wildlife biologist tell me that if I threw them into the bush that other coyotes will find them and rub up against them and the mites will spread to others. Best thing is to bring them some where and burn them to try and stop it from getting to others.

Default mites

This is a type of mange. Wolf mange they call it. Wolfs get it mostly but coyotes are getting more and more. Used to be mostly in the south but its moving north quickly!

So it will eventually kill them?

I've had 5 with shoulder mites an 1 with mange out of 102 coyotes. All the shoulder mites was off one bait. Last yr I got 13 with mange or mites out of 79.
I'm trying to get every coyote out of the area with the problem. Trouble is it's fairly close to a Hutterite colony an that attracts coyotes from all over

Can I make a quick request? If you guys get any more that have relatively good fur but you just want to toss out because of damaged/rubbed areas, can you drop them off with me? I'll skin them out myself. I have use for the scraps and the skulls, would rather see them used than just tossed anyways, especially since the winter fur is still nice.
