Default Why is improving your land illegal

Building your own deer factory is a show on American whitetail that I enjoy watching. They do many things that improve the land for game management. Like adding water holes, making bedding areas , and improving grazing and foraging. If I’m correct in Alberta this is the same as baiting witch is unlawful. I don’t agree with that . I don’t think seating by a pile of grain and planting multiple acres of forage to improve wildlife habitat should be painted with the same brush. on another note I think it would help to improve the economy a little bit, people will be buying the land , equipment tractors. Any thoughts?

Wink

It's not illegal, you got some land and you want a dugout for the critters to drink and you throw in a food plot nothing wrong with that, say alfalfa etc I feed the deer mostly bird seed...could shoot off the deck but I like to be in the woods.

Now if you put out feed, set a stand over it and hunt then you are illegally hunting.

Why would you even ask. If its your land do what you want and do it quietly . If somebody asks what you are doing say you are landscaping.
You are also allowed a borrow pit , if you need dirt . Not your fault it rained.

Intent
Intent
Intent

For you to get charged they would have to prove intent. You know you went blabbing all over the County and on the internet, that the improvements had nothing to do with agricultural practices, and all about deer and deer hunting.

If by coincidence your attempts at enhancing your agricultural potential of said property happened to be good for the deer, well that’s the way Alberta can be.

But why all the cloak and dagger we should be able to just have a better definition of baiting and be allowed to do such things. We should build and promote good deer management and not be scared of punishment

Thanks for stepping up.
When are you meeting with the Minister and her staff to push for such changes?

Let us know how it goes, please.

I've improved my little corner of the world by adding many bird feeders, a couple of bat houses and a back stop and shooting bench at 100 yards. I've not had any issues.

What is with you snowflakes and your affliction around post counts?

I’ve been here a long time, oh, I guess that’s my bad.
I’ve shared many stories, and a pile of advice through those years, I guess that makes me some kind of a bad person.
I’ve seen a pile of guys post these threads and have seen them go down in flames. So I interject some levity knowing it’ll be a hum dinger if it doesn’t get closed. Oh, perish the thought that I again share something sage, in my sarcasm.

And you wanna know why the seasoned members pack up and move on.

As long as you don't have a pail of grain hanging off the end of your rifle barrel I don't see an issue making habitat improvements either. Very gray area that would be virtually impossible to be in trouble for. Good luck!

Plant some apple trees too 5-10, once they are mature enough to have apples and they drop off the trees & you can have a stand 20 yards away, not baiting. But if you dumped apples there, thats baiting

I started the fall with four thousand alfalfa bales in stacks around the farm and multiple tree stands around the property, no charges yet.

As a wide F&W officer once told me, if the improvement or practice is for agricultural use, it is not considered baiting. You can literally sit beside a grain pile and be just fine.

Absolutely. Hunting near a grain bin on land that you have permission to access makes for the best venison.
