Default Lake Windermere Fishing B.C

Was hiking nearby and being the avid fly fisherman I am I decided to take a peek in the water. To my surprise I found this!

Does anyone know what kind of fish this is? I was thinking Kokanee Salmon but I could be wrong. Also are the running? I didn't think salmon ran in lakes. I wanted to quickly go grab my rod but I didn't know if it was even legal to fish for these so I decided to wait. Can anyone help me out?

Definitely Kokanee. I was born and raised in Cranbrook and the spawning Kokanee were always a big attraction in in the rivers and creeks. Late summer through early fall.

It is legal to fish for kokanee but when they are spawning it is best to leave them alone to do there thing, besides when they are in full spawn like this they are not worth eating. Best time to fish for them is early summer, troll with a good sized gang troll (I always liked the Ford Fender or a willow leaf) with a wedding ring spinner and maggots. Now you've got me thinking about the smoked Kokanee dad and I used to make.

You might want to fish for the bass in that lake. Not sure on the current regulations though.
