Default place to camp on the bow in or close to Calgary?

Hi there,

Not exactly a fishing post but...I was wondering if anyone knew of a place to camp and maybe fish on the Bow that is close to or in Calgary?? The fishing isn't a must but a cozy, "non-city like", place to camp over the weekend is.

I am doing a farmer's market on Macleaod trail and would like to be close to Macleod Trail, within 20 minutes drive. Hotel isn't in the budget...perhaps the next one

Thanks

Anybody know if you can camp along the bow via Grey Eagle Drive just SouthWest of the city? There must be some Calgarians on here that know the city inside out

Grey eagle drive isn't along the bow. But the elbow river. Also in the native reserve so I wouldn't camp there. No campgrounds on the bow near the city.

Maybe try Millarville Campground.
A creek, a farmers market and $20 bucks a night.
Probably about 25 miles away.

Black Diamond has a municipal campground on the river and Turner valley also has a municipal campground.

There a camp ground off highway 1X west of calgary just by bow river and kananaskis river. Just about half an hour away from calgary.
That section of the bow is still open for fishing I believe.
I have caught rainbows and whites off that area before.
Gap lake and grotto pond is also near by.
I hope this helps.

I wouldn't camp along the bow within the city limits. I think theres a by law against it, more concerning would be the inevitable crack addiction and hep c contraction that woukd result from some of your neighbours who make it thier permanent residence.

I live two blocks from the Bow near downtown, and unfortunately, you're correct about the permanent residence in some places. Totally illegal but they do it. You might also see toilet paper in and around the bushes. Stay away from that too. There's Hature's Hideaway south east of the city, but on the Highwood. I've floated by and it looks super nice.

Has Nature's Hideaway re-opened since the flood? They got hit pretty hard.

We camped out there a couple of weeks ago. It just reopened this summer as it was devastated during the floods.

All of the sites are still in the same places. There is a bit more vegetation around some of the sites that were really bare before (like those around the playground).

The general store and ice-cream shop that was just off Hwy 24 is no longer there. It has been torn out. There is now an ice-cream shop by the day use area, but that isn't open all of the time.

They've added some "comfort camping" tents. They're between the regular sites and the day use area.

The campground is better now in some ways than it was before.

But . . . the Bow! Holy smokes. We couldn't get our heads wrapped around it.

It has really changed in the area between the weir and the Hwy 24 bridge. We've camped and fished out there a couple dozen times, and in a lot of ways it was a totally different river.

Water levels were very low while and temps were high while we were out there. People (little kids, even) were able to walk from one side of the river (from the campground) to the other. There was a surprising amount of algae (not rock snot), very slow water, and quite a bit of stagnant water.

It will be interesting to see it when the water levels are higher. Maybe this portion of the river will make more sense to me then.
