Any reason to own a .308 and a 30-06??

I had a similar problem, last year I shot a little white tail buck with my 7 RM at 40 yards and after seeing the damage on the meat I decided to buy a smaller rifle for deer. I was going to do a 7mm-08, but after much debate I opted to go with a 260 rem, save the 7 RM for moose elk and such. For myself a 708 to 7RM was not a jump enough if you look at the ballistics on normal shooting distance 0-400 yards.. so defiantly if I was in a more similar situation as yourself say a 280 rem and 7-08 the ballistics are very similar and not worth it in my option. But both of my rifles are identical makes models and scope, I'm going by strictly terminal ballistics on game 0-400 yards.

There's no reason not to own one of each unless you are on a tight budget and can only feed one.
Me, I have one 308 and two '06 and looking at a third '06 that looks a lot like a Winchester model 1895.

This pretty much sums it up. Personally, I love guns* I have no problem owning guns chambered in the same caliber, cartridge, or 2 that are so close in performance the only real difference is on paper. I own a couple 308s and yet I find myself currently wanting/waiting for a 30-06 Benelli R1 to pop up . So, if you're trying to justify owning an 06 when you already own a 308, you should probably look at something else. But! If you found a good deal on an 06 and don't mind having 2 guns that are very close in performance, I'd say go for it!

I have a Weatherby Vanguard in 30-06 with a reasonably heavy Nikon scope. With it's 24" barrel it's not super heavy but I would rather pack something smaller and lighter if walking all day. A Tikka T3 Lite would fill the bill. And why not in another equally accurate and nearly as fast 30 cal. cartridge as 308 Win? Less weight, 2" shorter. Why the hell not? Deer, moose, elk.....

Yes exactly. Keep a 24" barrel on a 308 win, run lapua or Norma cases, compress your loads and run 150's at 2950 fps +/-
This was a rem 700 243 until it got an 11 twist 30 cal benchmark barrel, McMillan stock and a nice cerekote job from Rob. Very accurate with 47gr varget 150 Ttsx at 2930 fps.

Yes one can have a 308 and 3006. M14 and a M1 Garand.

No reason to own either one really....unless you just can't seem to find a comparable 7-08, or 270/280...

I haven't owned a 308 or a 30-06 in years and doubt I ever will again.

I own both,
both work fine;
I hand load 150 grain bullets in the 308, and 165 grain in the 30-06 so there trajectories are pretty much equal.
What ever the 308 can do the 30-06 will do slightly better.
