Default job description.

I mentioned in another thread that I thought gov't has overstepped it's job description and is involved in many things I don't believe they should be.

What do you think the duties and obligations of the gov't should be.

Arts programs? mandated day care? Support for returning vets? Armed forces? tax collectors? Licensing every aspect of our life? Deciding who should or should not be 'married'? protect its citizens at home and abroad? Just at home? save the world? save beer bottles?

What should the gov't do?

Personally I'd like to see power shift from Ottawa to the provincial level. Let Alberta decide on how Alberta is run, let Ontario decide on how Ontario is run, etc. The Feds should look after things such as the military and other "national" matters, and other, more important things like health care and property rights (as if we have any) should be looked after provincially and to a lesser extent, the civic government. That's just me though.

Provide a standing army to protect against foreign and domestic threats and provide a police force which protects everyone from the most basic of laws (Don't steal or defraud another person and do not apply unwanted force upon another person).

That's it, that's all.

well funny thing is , we vote the government in . the day dream that is democracy hey .

“People often say that, in a democracy, decisions are made by a majority of the people. Of course, that is not true. Decisions are made by a majority of those who make themselves heard and who vote - a very different thing.”

There are three levels of govt,.....each stepping on each others toes. The reason I mention this is that I would not want the feds to be in control of things like road issues as the result would be that Quebec would have 4 lanes everywhere. Nor would I want the local municipal govt in charge of income taxes as they already have too much stupidity in relying on their administration to direct them (explain things to them) that they should know, as part of their elected position. Love the scam thats called seperation of governance and management.

But to try to answer your question, government should be involved in;
1) funding media outlets that pump the star George Stomboly
2) funding artists that make art out of scat
3) buy paintings with one red stripe down the middle for as much as possible thereby supporting art promoters as well.
4) doing everything possible to ensure that every province ends up with a provincial sales tax
5) installing cameras everywhere possible and ticketing everthing
6) selling anything of public value for pennys on the dollar (but first spend two dollars to buy one dollar of value), like hydro/power distribution systems, etc
7) spend the tax dollars on subsidizing fiestivils, expos, games, that way they can then make arrangements for toll roads run by private companies
8) support national treasures like the oilers team
9) spend 100s of millions to build arenas for the national treasures as everybody who pays taxes needs them
10) pay for community, inclosed, year-round, deluxe, hockey arenas because why support all sports when you can support just a few or one. Girls don't do sports anyway, and all males should play hockey even if they don't like it. Sports like archery or fishing don't have millionare owners of pro-teams that need a fan based developed/subsidized. see points 8 and 9
11) throw billions at putting your city on the map by hosting an olympics-now we just gotta figure out which map that was and pour more money into tourism promotion as we all need jobs as waiters and hostesses....look at what it does for Vegas - "Vegas Baby".
12) Ok we given money to the millionare team owners, to those yappy artists, to those arena builders, to big party crowd, to the map-put-ter-on ers, to the festival promoters, to the hydro system buyers,....who's left......oh wait...don't we have a department called economic development.....they can hand out money to our freinds that have businesses....and we'll call it stimulus/job creation
13) did we forget someone.....awwwwh....our freinds that have promotion companies need some envlopes filled with 100bills.....for a new "Sponsorship"....now just what are we sponsor-shipping besides cash.
14) Hey lets throw Alan Rock a bone and hire him at a university....no one in private business will let this guy budget a coffee break let alone a program....he should be good to teach?? right????? or lead a university...I hope.
15) Speaking of Alan Rock, now that the gun registry is such a blazing success, how about some other program along those lines, like ....ummm....the details are not important....we'll let the beauracrats work them out.
16) Hey, I know.... how about a bridge to somewhere it wasn't needed, and we should make it the worlds longest over ice covered water because thats always a good idea. And we'll give operation to a private firm who will then tell the public to screw off as "Traffic statistics are not released to the public as this is privileged and confidential information of Strait Crossing Bridge Limited, the privately-owned operator of the bridge." NIIIIIIIICE!
17) How about funding day care. Parents can't properly raise and take care of their kids anyway. And this way our indoctrination can really take hold. And those that want to take care of their kids themselves (foolish ones) can still pay for it anyway. Think of how many more women can be hired cheaply as their cost to go to work has gone down. Our freinds in big business will thank us.
18) Don't we need a place for old senile politicians or for old freinds - got it - the Senate.
19) Don't we need some old out-of-date subs from Britian.
20) How about a retirement system where we have no idea how much is needed, but we'll spend it now and worry about it later. We can call it CPPP....Oh that ones taken.....Ok ..then just CPP....but we should give Quebec a pass on this one and let them do things their way...that way we can still spend this money on them but they dont have to contribute.
21) Shouldn't we mess with that language issue....let make everything sold in Canada more expensive....and increase the cost of govt operations...we'll call it bi-cullingualism....just for the french...
22) If we are going to mess with language....how about culture....we'll support mosques, ethnic community centers, etc....anything that makes people think they are special and unique and helps them keep seperate identities and not think of themselves as a nationality of Canadians.

I just got started.......way too many great ideas, generated by our glorious politicians and beauracrats, out there, to decide on.....heck lets just do them all.

Ammo shortage......heck, in comparision, I only fired one bullet....so far.....got a bunker full.

But I did feel a might guilty......sort of like sitting in a pasture with holes all around you and way too many targets with their head up. It was almost too easy.....I just closed my eyes and squeezed a few off ....of the top of my head.

Also can't make each post too long and I do have to earn a living.
