Hunting Caribou with a 270.
I'm heading to Quebec in September to hunt caribou and the only rifle I currently have is a 270. Just seeing if anyone has had experience hunting caribou, and if a 270 with 150gr bullets will be enough gun. Thanks in advance.

Yes. Place your shot right and you could use almost anything.

Absolutely. I used 140gr bullets out of my 270 on them and they are perfectly fine. Nothing to worry about.

In my mind a 270 would be an almost ideal caribou rifle.

270 is a great cartridge, and more than enough gun for Caribou. They are not hard to kill just put it behind the shoulder and pull the trigger. My buddy shot his bulls with his 270, with 130 gr ballistic tips, worked perfectly.
I wouldn't worry a bit about taking the 270, I almost took mine, but I just finished doing up a 7 mag so I wanted to use it.
Good luck

I wouldn't hesitate to use my .270 on anything "big game" in Canada. 130 gr is plenty enough even for moose in my opinion. Have yourself a great time.

FWIW, years ago, a friend of mine was a missionary at Pond Inlet. He shot many caribou with a 22-250. A 270 is more than enough gun.

Rankin
I know it ain't Quebec, but when I was up in Rankin Inlet the most common caliber with the locals was a .223 so I think your .270 should be good!

I've heard many stories of the native/inuit using anything from .223, 22/250, 30-30, 303Brit (being a favourite), and up. The .270 would be my choice, however if I could I'd use my 209x50 Encore bbl.
You certainly don't need a magnum to drop a caribou. Heck, a short action in .308, .30TC, 7mm-08, 6.5x55..the list goes on.
Just make bullet placement count.
