Default What's Camrose Like?

So, wifey and I may have an option to move to Camrose. It seems really practical for the two of us, but I have to admit, I don't know the area very well. I sure like the real estate prices, and I kinda prefer small town life.

Can anyone offer an informed opinion?

Thanks in advance.

I retired in Camrose two years ago. I like the quiet small town life and no traffic. We can purchase all of the basics locally, and Edmonton is an hour away for specialty items. The airport is actually just as quick to access from here, as from many parts of Edmonton. We have a range just minutes away, and there is decent hunting minutes from the city. The only things that I miss, is not having a nice lake or good fishing in the near vicinity.

Thanks!!!!

I have really gotten very used to bad fishing......so I could likely live with that.

I like small town life too, that's why it is appealing to me. What are the restaurants and stores like?

Is it a town with good community "feel"?

If a single lane traffic circle to get into town appeals to you you're good to go. It's not even a big traffic circle. Lol

We have a fair number of decent restaurants, and stores for the population, as Camrose is a hub for the local municipalities

It's about perfect size. Just under 20,000 people, low crime, everything you need. Can be fishing in dried meat lake which is 12 minutes away for pike. Decent fishing for small pike with the odd big one. 20 min away from coal lake, again, decent fishing for small pike with the odd big one thrown in. Big perch if you can find them. The town is clean compared to other places.

I have lived in Edmonton for 48 of my 49 years, with a one year stint at a college in Nanaimo. Last fall, I was in Camrose a number of times after hunting with Elk11 and Densa44. I was thoroughly impressed. Just about every chain store you see in Edmonton is there. All the restaurants too. Nice amenities and rec facilities. New areas. Older areas. Let's just say that if my wife would give the green light, I'd move there in a minute. The hunting and fishing opportunities are good. Waterfowl paradise. Two pheasant release sites nearby. Good deer and moose hunting. Fishing nearby at Pigeon, Gull, and Sylvan. I would envy you, Riden.

x2 - I lived in Camrose for 3 years while doing my undergrad degree at Augustana. No complaints - very clean, friendly town. As a university student we found it a little on the quiet side so made lots of road trips to Edmonton. A couple sets of friends from school decided to settle down in Camrose and they both seem to enjoy it. Good deer and bird hunting in the area. Buffalo lake is less than an hour away with good pike and burbot fishing (at least it was when I was there.)

The only small gripe I can say I had was with the copious number of seniors. Camrose is somewhat disproportionate to the rest of the province when it comes to that demographic. No slight to the seniors population - other than there were way too many people driving that should not have had driver's licenses. I had way more vehicle close calls in my 3 years in Camrose than I did in my 5 years in Edmonton.

It the florida of the north, for the old farmers, so there are a lot of seniors. And the cops there do enforce the law up to a senior's standards.

I was there for 2 years, and grew up in the area, so I like it, but it definitely has a sleepy vibe.

I live 45 minutes from it and love it. Good stores, not super busy, you can be out in the country in 5 minutes, traffic is light. It would be high on my list to move to.

One thing though. Trains. If your not used of them like me, took a bit of getting used to.

I'm not used to trains and I'm not really sure what you mean? Dummy this up for me and type slow.

Depending on the part of the city that you live in, you might hear a lot of trains going by.

For the size of the city, seems like a lot of train activity.

Camrose even has a ski hill for winter fun. Not sure if there is a ski jump is still in operation.

No ski hill, no more jump. Gwynne which is 15 min west has a ski hill.

I worked there for a couple years, really enjoyed Camrose. It grew quite a bit a few years ago too, then seemed to back down again. (lost BK)

I remember a nice pub in the very west end and a great steak house but can't remember the names. Likely Camrose steak house lol.
There are a couple chinese buffets that I have tried, can't go back though.

Gotcha. My first thought was waiting at a crossing for long periods.

I dated a girl from there about 16 years ago so I spent a fair amount of time there. I like it. Nice community, not very busy yet still has all the amenity's.

Great place if you like getting photo radar tickets.
(I do like camrose, but if I did a word association test and camrose came up, I'd say photo-radar.)

That's because its only on the highway to get the out of towners.
(And moose drive painfully slow anyway)

The photo radar truck only has 2 spots it sits, and they only update the truck every 10 years. Doubt they ticket many locals, I've sure never been dinged

Oh ok. I'll watch out for it then. Since I have been living in Wetaskiwin for the last year and commuting back and forth every day for work.
