Thumbs up That was fun! Good interaction with the RCMP!!

I happened to drive by a neighbors house yesterday and saw one of my favorite trucks. I asked if he wanted to sell it, turns out his neighbor across the street asked if he could park it there for a couple weeks. Sure!
A year and a half later, yesterday he said to me it was abandoned, I could have it for free!
I noticed that the VIN was covered, knew what that meant. I searched on http://app.cpic-cipc.ca/English/searchformvin.cfm and yep, stolen vehicle.

I called the RCMP and gave them the info, less than an hour later it is a done deal, truck towed file started.
The moron that parked it there then reported it stolen and collected the insurance money. I am guessing they are going to have a warrant for his arrest for insurance fraud, and the scale, little baggies and assorted paraphanalia in the truck aren't going to help this wanna-be-biker any either.

The Police are happy with us, they get to close a theft case a pursue a fraud case (hopefully).

Good hunting guys!

The stupidity of thieves and fraud artists boggles my mind.

This guy could have taken and parked/stashed the truck almost anywhere else he wanted and collected his insurance scam money. If they found the truck, he could still claim it was stolen. No witnesses make it tougher to convict for fraud.

The fact that he asked your neighbour to park it there and left it there now makes your neighbour a witness linking him directly to the scam. Easy to convict.

I agree - guy's a moron and deserves everything he has coming to him. Just mind boggling how this didn't occur to the guy even once over the last year and a half. lol.

Considering what you found in the vehicle...maybe he just forgot where he parked the truck and genuinely reported it stolen.

The property owner thinks the engine was either gone or going. Makes me lean even further toward insurance fraud.

I'm not sure I'm reading this post correctly. Are you saying that where you live you get to "salvage" a vehicle that has been abandoned? It doesn't get towed away to the police impound yard where efforts are made to contact registered owner? Eventually, such vehicles that are truly abandoned (for a variety of reasons) get sold at a public auction.
And you say the local RCMP allow you to do this? I have never heard of this happening in AB. Do you have to slip the the RCMP a few bucks before they let you scoop an abandoned vehicle? I must not be reading OP correctly. It would be a sweet deal for someone to simply get to "claim' any of those vehicles you see from time to time with those bright red stickers on them.
You don't happen to have a marroon dodge minivan that was stolen from me 7 yrs ago that was never recovered? Perhaps whoever stole it abandoned it in your neck of the woods. You can keep the van if you have already made a deal with the local cops, but I would buy back a berkley 6'6" 2 pce graphite fishing rod that I was partial to, and was in the van. lol

I must be reading you wrong. You cluelessly misunderstood his clear articulation of not doing what you said at all. Maybe you found something in what I am saying that wasnt said at all? Maybe you should look into ginko biloba.

BY what I read below, contacted police, truck towed, file started, looking for fraud culprit.

"I called the RCMP and gave them the info, less than an hour later it is a done deal, truck towed file started."

See now you have brought the wrath of the god of ao down on your head ...lol
But to tell you the truth i read it the same way

I have turned over a few vehicles to the police that ive found in my parking lots never got to claim one yet. Usually they just haul them away not much fanfare involved. Maybe i will deal with rcmp next time instead of eps.... lol

I am fully aware of abandoned vehicle law in Alberta. My intention was to do a vin search to find the owner and see if he still had any interest in it.
Also the landowner wanted compensation for the idiot parking there for so long, I am able to help with both.
When the vin search came up stolen I immediately called the police. Who wouldn't?
Does every thread have to be picked apart by the house detectives?

Ok- I just actually read your reply. Are you for real?
Salvage was never mentioned.
Read. Then type.
I asked if it was for sale.
Vehicles do not just get towed to a 'Police impound yard'.
Because you have never heard of this, and your assumption was wrong anyway, it can not be true?
Slip a few bucks to the RCMP? wow
Again, read, think, then type if you feel you must. No red sticker.
Why would I have your maroon van? Deal with the local cops?
..........ya I just have no answers for your ridiculous garbage.

edit- just saw that you are suspended. Answered for nothing apparently.
