Default Black or Griz track??

I'm thinking black... no claw marks on the fronts...(which I didn't get a pic of)

Which makes him a pretty decent black I think... cause that's my size 11.5 foot next to him.

Again... his track was on the trail on my way back down the mtn.

I ran a little bit faster....

The way the toes are arched (instead of more straight across) is an indicator it's more likely a black.

The no claws on the fronts (not pictured) but I'd say are a second clue leaning toward a black.

If it's a black it's BIG.

Black

Here is one I took a picture of a couple of weeks ago. I'd like to catch up to him.

No Blacks on the Ya Ha, prime Grizzly country.

Reminds me of that line from Jaws. You're gonna need a bigger gun.

Not true. I shot one back there about 10 years ago. Maybe he was the last one.

According to Frank Coggins, who worked on the ranch way back in the sixties, they were all Blacks in those days. Over time the Grizzlies took over, they're not exactly compatible.

Sure they are. I've seen Grizzly and blacks within a 1/4 mile of each other more than once. They may not feed together but they will work around one another.

Tell that to the bears in the National Parks, I've had black and grizzly in sight at the same time several times in Waterton and Jasper.

Grizzlies are not above eating their black brethren.

Seen the same thing there, black was way up a tree and grizz was at the bottom looking up .

The lack of claw marks suggests black bear, but also the curvature of the toe marks - grizz are typically straighter across.

At that size though, who cares - run outta there!

Pretty tough to determine between a black and griz from the track left by the back foot Bessie. Here is really clear grizzly track for comparison.

Thanks for that.

I was able to check out several sets of front and back tracks.... no typical claw marks on the fronts.....

I just don't recall seeing a black bear set that friggin big...

Wish I took a pic of the grizzly tracks I saw out by wilmore last week. Had both feet (size 10 boot) inside his pad and his claws were 2 inch past my toes. Must be a huge bear. I was watching over my shoulder more then fishing.

Other than size, what is the difference between a black and grizzly track?
