Default Elk Hunting

Good day, I am still quite new to hunting, Deer is no problem, but i am looking for a good location for a general elk. I have tried for a couple years now with no luck. Any pointers of locations that may prove to be better suited will help. I usually end up in wmu360 looking for elk.

Thanks

The best elk hunting spot is always the one closest to home. Scout it weekly, keep your eyes on the herd year round and you'll be successful.

Best area for elk in Alberta now are near the farm areas. Lots of good alfalfa and not to many wolves. However farmers are being bothered so much by hunters especially the inconsiderate ones.

Scouting is the key. As mentioned by others.
I read somewhere that killing elk is the easy part, it's the finding that's the hard work.
Google earth can help identify potential scouting areas without having to waste a day hiking.

Personally, I look for grassy slopes with lots of dark cover near by. If you can't get access to alfalfa fields that is.

Oh yeah! Google earth is awesome. You can find good spots to hunt, and don't even have to walk anywhere. I find that most elk kinda stay within a 100 yards or so of the logging roads, drive up and down them during the early November rut and your bound to find a nice 6x6 bull. Also I hear there are lots of elk around the suffield area.

Coyote, actually elk avoid any road that has more than 20 vehicles per day, good article in AO a few years back showing radio collared elk would parallel the roads. Only time you can catch elk on roads is in middle of night if you have correct heritage.

Default Elk

Lots of elk out there. Just came back from a scout trip. They come out early morning and late in the evening. They bed down during the day (mostly weather pending) that's when you can move from ridge to ridge. In my experience.

My experience with elk is that they can be just about anywhere. Seems to me that they will put on a lot of miles in a day and I don't put to much faith in scouting for them in may or June.

Scouting for elk works year round, but scouting for elk doesn't means looking for elk, you have to look for rutting signs: rubs and wallow. If you find an area that has hundreds of rubs from years past, the elk will be back comes fall, even if they are miles away at the moment.

I'm always looking for elk scat. No matter the season. Last night out on a bear hunt, I was able to rule out an area that I would have thought held elk. Saw a ram tho

It is not easy to find elk especially from the truck. You need to walk a lot if you are in foothills west from Edmonton. Elk is using roads only at night and briefly. At least 2 hills from your vehicle. Good luck
