Default Moose Posole recipe

Hi
Just had moose posole for dinner. It was delicious. I bet my wife that we were the only ones in Alberta that were having that for dinner tonight. Won't tell you what the stakes were but I will tell you that I gave her pretty good odds. Who wins the bet? Before I pay off I will need confirmation by way of a post on this thread that you had that tonight and that you actually know what it is.(no need to give detailed recipe- just a general description of the dish will suffice). We'll post the entire recipe in 48 hours at which time all bets will be off.

PS: We' ve now got a second wager (even odds) that no one in Alberta even knows what posole is. Can you help us decide a winner on that one?

Default Moose Posole recipe

So what do you think the odds would be??? Moose in this hemisphere is abundant like lamb is in the Arab region. Did you make yours as a soup or a stew?

Stew. I knew Albertans would know what a moose is but I didn't think anyone north of Arizona would know what posole was. Looks like I could be in big trouble on this bet. Wonder if she wants to go double or nothing.

I had moose tonight but I have to admit I never heard of no posole before. Not only is moose abundant but so are internet connections. Any internet ranger can google up posole and get 106,000 hits in .012 seconds.

So....does moose stew count?

Real authentic mexican Pozole is one of my all time favorite dishes. It is one of those things that no substitute will ever suffice, the real stuff is the only stuff.

That being said i would be curious for the recipe.

Well after only a few hours I've had to concede that my wife has won hands down. Sure am glad I didn't gamble away anything important-like some of next fall's huntin' days. It was a dumb bet on my part. I'd have been smarter to bet no one in MEXICO was eating moose posole. Don't think there are many moose south of the Rio Grande.
Anyway here's the recipe. It came out of a Southwestern cook book we picked up in Arizona so I assume it's reasonably authentic.

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 large yellow onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 pound lean pork, cut into bite size pieces (better yet use moose, venison elk etc)
1 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
1 teaspoon chopped cilantro
1 teaspoon dried oregano, crushed
1 teaspoon ground cumin
2 tablespoons red chile flakes
4 cups chicken stock or broth
4 cups water
1 large can (#10) white hominy with the juice(we used a 28 oz can.I gather that a#10 is huge)

Heat the oil in a large heavy pot and saute' the onion, garlic and meat until the meat is lightly browned. Add the pepper, salt, parsley,cilantro, oregano, cumin,red chile flakes, chicken stock and water, cover and simmer over low heat for one hour. Add the hominy with the liquid from the can and continue cooking for one more hour, stirring occasionally over low heat. Add more water if necessary.

We had it served over rice. Not for someone who is a strictly "meat and potatoes" person, but if you like things a bit on the spicy side, you'll like this.

Thought for a while until the recipe came out that it had somethin to do with the ole at the end we normally through out. Showed it to wifey as we like the hot stuff so we'll be a chompin when we get the ingredients.
