New access condition on grazing lease.
Here is a new grazing lease access requirement I have not seen before.
This lease had no animals, zero on it this summer.
Specific Access Conditions for this Disposition
Contact for hunting must be done pre-season, between August 1st and October 15th.
Leaseholder Conditions as Approved by the Minister
No access if livestock in field.
No motorized vehicles allowed.
Only foot access allowed.
Please contact between 9 AM and 5 PM from Monday to Friday. Email preferred.
Camping by permission only.
For non-hunting recreational access, please contact 7 days before accessing lease.

Looks pretty standard. Pretty sure camping is not allowed whatsoever. Doesn't matter what the lease holder says. No fires either...

Lots of conditions like that in the Foothills. I saw one last year when I was searching where they had a day in late August where all of those interested would need to show up with ID and the available dates would be divided out on a first come first serve basis on that day only.
There were quite a few that had ridiculous conditions that I assume were put in place to make it as inconvenient as possible to come out and hunt

Ha
I'm pretty sure that's not permitted. Lease holders cannot set dates for contact.
Was this on the Access to Lease web site?

They cant set dates or control entry either. Your just informing them of when you are going on. Not asking.

If it's approved by the minister of course they can. 80% of WMU312 is like this.

Lease
I cut & pasted the conditions right off the govt site.
We had freely hunted this lease for the last 20 + years under another lease holder. He had gotten older and packed in his farming career. The new lease holder is pretty much anti hunting mentality. They also have developed their own access form they want filled out before permission requests are reviewed.
We watched this lease all summer and they never had one animal on it.

Noise
Sounds like people need to be calling the Minister and the Lease folks till they get tired of hearing the phone ringing.

This is the attitude and reason why we are having so much difficulty gaining access from leaseholders on crown lease land. And yes the Lease holder has the power and control, they fence the land, maintain the land, work the land, raise cattle and have a contract to do so on that land... we are not going to win that battle in court so best make nice with these leaseholders and abide by their wishes or we will not be hunting those lands.

id say closer to 95% for sure.
Read one as this yesterday,
"show up at RR xx at 9am 2 saturdays before hunting season begins (please note, this is NOT the same day every year!) for a draw, hunts not allowed to be longer than 5 consecutive days, no more than 3 parties on lease at any given time"
if its minister approved, its good to go. These people saying "you are not asking for access, you are just telling them your coming" is flat out wrong. this is why the situation is getting worse!
do i agree with how it is right now? not really, but it is what it is. If the minster has approved no more than 2 people on a quarter per day, and 500 people jsut say im coming, how does that work out? not good for anyone.

As mentioned, the conditions that are approved are the conditions for that specific property. If they're playing hardball, I'd be phoning in that livestock were not present. The ones I've seen without livestock all year also let me access easily so I didn't bother bringing it up.

Lease Holders are not required to have livestock on the lease every year.
More than 3 consecutive years without livestock will raise questions by the crown.
Some management practices may only have the cattle on the lease for a short duration during the year.

Completely not true. They absolutely control entry, just look at the conditions approved by the minister for each lease because many are different.
As many people know here, I've had a few issues with leaseholders. The vast majority have been great to deal with and I know that if you tried to "inform them when your going on" and don't ask, you will be charged with tresspassing.
And rightfully so.
