Birds eating berries
Does anyone have a good method besides netting to keep birds out of saskatoons?

I have seen a guy using an Owl decoy on a pole. It also was turning by the wind...

I've seen some people use shiny tinsel type silver ribbons that flutter in the breeze used before - not sure how effective they are.

I know you said "besides netting", but my netting solution works great.
I use one of those big screens that goes around a circular patio awning. I have to use two people with hockey sticks to lift it over the tops, and we drape it over 2 fairly large, sprawled out saskatoon trees.
I bought a half dozen of these screens a few years ago on sale, I use 2 or 3 depending. I don't put them on until they start to ripen, as it seems the birds don't bother them until they start to ripen anyway.

Pick them as soon as they are ripe.
When we are on the ball and pick twice a day, we get the berries. As soon as we miss a day or two, the birds clean them all up, even the half ripe ones.

We hang tin pie plates and pieces of tin foil with string, anything to make some movement works.

This year I am leaving the crows and magpies alone. Maybe they can keep the berry monsters down.

I have a lot of magpies and it doesn’t seem to make a difference. I’ll have to try hang up something reflective that can blow in the wind.

Birds eating berries will spread the berry seeds around so not a bad thing.
Get a cat and make it hungry let cat do its thing. Shot gun also an effective alternative if in an area where firearm can be discharged.

Lee Valley tools sell a few of these reflective items. Tape, reflectors etc
