Another car ....
The Pinto that caused the controversy. Hit in the rear by a 3/4 ton Dodge van, at 70 MPH while the Pinto was stopped.
In the case with the pinto pictured above. Ford was acquitted of all charges. Most believe Ford lost the case. They didn’t. The autopsy showed the girls in the car were dead instantly from the impact. The picture shows the force of the hit from the full size van pretty much drove the bumper through the backs of their skulls. The bumper was also an illegal railroad tie. Bumpers of the day were of standard height so they would hit each other. This modified bumper went under the car and drove upward. The crushed car left shows this to be fact. The autopsy also showed no scarring in the lungs. Lung tissue begins to scorch around 140 degrees. No scarring of the lung tissue showed these girls were not breathing immediately following the impact. They did not burn to death, they were sledgehammered! Also the pinto gas tank behind the rear axle was the standard design of its day. The side fill nozzle could pull out if hit hard enough, but modern design, now all follow the side fill design. The Gremlin, Camaro, Mustang and most other cars had a rear fill tank. Much more susceptible to fire from rear end collision.
