Default Misogyny... why are some guys creepy?

I was at a store today buying some materials to make an item for fishing when I witnessed something disturbing. A middle aged to older guy winking and calling a cashier cutie and just making her very uncomfortable.

She handled it well going from polite and smiling to losing the smile and changing tone. Clearly to express the poor behaviour was not appreciated.

As it turns out...female cashiers experience a SIGNIFICANT amount of unwanted and creepy behaviour from winking, name calling to rude comments. Sadly mostly older guys.

As most cashiers are young women it got me womdering if it is common.

Sadly it is after inquiring.

So if you know anyone or witness anyone making inappropriate comments or behaviours to cashiers...please say something. Today I was completely caught off guard. I will say something next time. Unfortunately with social distancing these creeps have too much time with cashiers with other customers a ways away.

Yeah you go out in the world and stop guys from hitting on women inappropriately. Let me know when you go to the bar and try to do that, white knight coming through.

Having talked to alot of my friends who are girls about that kind of stuff, it is disgustingly common, all of my friends have been cat called or otherwise had disgusting comments made to them like that guy, usually from older men. I work in EMS and the majority of my female coworkers have had patients do things like that or get groped in the course of the job. It is unfortunately very common

I hate it when women treat me like a piece of meat and act inappropriately towards me

Truthfully I don’t experience men acting inappropriately too often unless it’s at places where alcohol is involved. Back in my bar days I got in a few fights over it because of my big mouth too.

Personally I think it’s less common these days then it was 10+years ago but I don’t hangout in the same places now either

Well maybe if a few more people stepped up to these creeps instead of trying to defend their sickening actions it might help keep the perverts at bay. When people start accepting this as normal, acceptable behavior its time for a serious head shake.

Have had women do the same when I worked in the public when I was younger. Some people just are more friendly which turns into weird. Had a few women that like to touch as well. Happen both ways.

Part of dealing with public is dealing with people who are not always behaving well. Be it flirting , rude or belligerent.

I'm a middle aged to older man and every time I go to the grocery store there is always a younger female checking me out.

One old girl tried to pick me up while standing outside in line at the bottle depot the other day, she wanted me to buy her an ice cream at the Big Moo .... there was no winking it was all about ice cream ... women or at least some Cougars do that too.

Lots of good stories from the Sylvan Legion, however, the Iqaluit Legion was the best, those Inuit girls sure liked to dance, there was no winking, just a fun time.

There is a big difference between a 60 year old dude asking a woman at a bar if you can buy her a drink and hitting on a 16 year old check out girl at Superstore.

It’s not rocket science to be respectful to people at their place of work.

I have seen it too. Nothing worse than a old creep. Talk to some of the young girls that work at golf course club houses if you want some good pervert stories. Sick actually.

Right? If a woman wants to earn a paycheck she better be ready to deal with it!

Do you have any daughters? I never see stuff like this anymore so I don't have a chance to say something but I have no issue speaking my mind in public.

It's disrespectful. I also don't tolerate people being rude or nasty to retail workers for no reason. I have made a scene over that a couple of times in stores and more times than I can remember in the bars.

It isn't just older guys. I was at DQ on Friday and there was a young cashier taking the orders. While I dtood there waiting for my irder a group of boys (about her age) walked up and one of them was insistent on trying to get her number. He repeatedly thrust his phone at her, even though she said no. Then he went behind the counter to try again. The manager at least at this point took her off and moved her to the take out window. He then followed her over there, essentially trapping her. At that point I had had enough but the manager simply escorted him to the front again.

In my opinion the whole group should of been kicked out when they wouldn't stop harassing her but going behind the counter then literally trapping her in the corner. That was just messed. Then add that there is a pandemic going on...

I seen it before but that one stuck with me

The only guys who complain about white knights are the guys whose lousy people skills / drunken leering get them shot down repeatedly by numerous women. If someone is persistent and they won’t bugger off when a lady or ladies reject them, then that’s called a creep or a stalker. I’ve pitched a few of those out in my bar staff days. I’ve been a guy biding for some affection before, but at least I’d get the frigging point and not need third party intervention if there was zero or negative reciprocation. One has to try of course, but one also has to realize when their only chances with the woman they’re pursuing would include duct tape and a casual attitude towards kidnapping.

I have the discussion with younger guys (12-14 y/o) on a pretty regular basis (when they're in the school building)...talking about what it means to operate in a professional environment. Sad to realize that some still don't get it 40 or 50 years down the road.

Not making excuses here, but there can be a multitude of factors.

Some people lose their "filter" as they get older.
Some people come from a day and age where it wasn't frowned upon - they think they're being complimentary.
Cultural influences play a role as well. I remember our staff having to have an intervention with a manager of ours who had moved here to work - to explain that what might have passed in the old country was not acceptable here.

And HVA7mm hit a good point - the music and entertainment industry affects attitudes as well.

I have four daughters, and they have all had their share of Creepy Uncle Joes at work. From getting harassed at Peavy Mart as a cashier, to having an ice cream cone thrown back at them working at McDonalds. A couple work together at the Brewhouse here, one is a manager. It gets bad in there, but my one daughter is not to be trifled with. She has round house slapped a Creepy Joe, and she was ready to feed him more, but her friend the bouncer tossed him.

I haven't been in a situation where I've seen it happen, but I'd be pretty comfortable telling Creepy Joe to back the hell off. In a loud way. Or whatever needed to be done to get the message across.

When your most successful pickup line is, 'excuse me miss, does this rag smell like chloroform? '......it's time for you to be restrained in a nursing home. And sedated.

It goes both ways. Been harrassed by older women numerous times. Both sober and drunk. I agree that people need to speak up and call them out. It is not appropriate.
