Default Tool kit for Quad

So, getting ready my new quad for the season.
Has no factory tool kit so I thought I should throw one together.

Looking for input and ideas.

So far I have.

1. 10mm + 12mm wrench
2. Small hammer
3. Plyers
4. Tie wire
5. Lug nut wrench
6. Small air pump
7. Philips screwdriver

I've already got the tow strap and winch accessories covered.

Sparkplug socket

Chainsaw and gas. Clearing blow down off trails you can use a hand saw but power is faster.

If your doing any remote riding, not a bad idea to have the ability sew up a torn CV boot. Pack in grease, sew up, tape up. Throw in some winch cable clamps Oh and all sizes of hose clamps too.

Flat head screw drivers are handy too. I'm assuming your quad is fuel injected. But being able to drain water from a carb can save you lots of time trying to get your rig started after riding a bit too deep in the puddles. They also make some hose clamps easier to remove.

jumper cables never had much luck with pull start
I ripped a tire lug off a back tire and put a 6 inch hole in the tire. Road home slowly on that tire as it was finished anyway.

A buddy, just in case you do have a real problem that can't be fixed.

A small container with extra fuses and extra bulbs. No one mentioned an air pressure gauge. A roll of flag tape to mark your trail in case you have to walk out. check the service manual for your quad and it might tell you a list of tools required for that model.

An old fashioned "arm strong" 4 or 5 ft. take down buck/bow saw with extra blades. Slower than a chainsaw but no fuel, less maintenance and no breakdowns.

And an attachment for an umbrella hood either for the quad or your helmet for that rainy day kind of weather. Like the new 'Nubrella' product. Or compact fold up rain gear.

One other tool mentioned elsewhere. "An ATV axle wrench. So there is one thing your pliers, T-handle and Allen wrench sets can't tighten. It's the nut that holds the rear axle in the swinger. They tend to come loose and when that happens ruin the axle carrier bearings. Include it as part of your pre-ride check but to tighten you'll need an axle wrench."

One thing that ****es me off about the newer Suzuki quads is no pull start, so I carry a small boost pack. I got just about everything, everyone seems to come to my quad when they need something. Not sure if someone else mentioned it but I also carry a small pipe wrench. The little plastic ammo boxes you can buy at cabelas or canadian tire make good tool kits.

Is it possible to install a pull start ? I've got an older Yamaha and think it was an option.

I actually bought a kit for this on my Honda.

The Rancher is electric start only.

I have rope started my old Foreman 450, but don't think many of us are man enough to pull over a 700 cc machine...hence the lack of pull starters on many quads.

I have in a pinch used the battery to weld. It drains the battery so you will need to pull start. But pinching the welding rod in the positive and grounding the negative will result in a Jerry rig weld. Don't ask how I figured that out. Lol

My ‘07 Rancher has a pull start as well. It’s under a little panel on the right hand side that you remove first. It takes a fair tug but I’ve used it to start the thing in a pinch.

My brute force 750 has a pull start. Lots of machines have a automatic decompression so it really doesn’t take a great effort to pull start bigger cc motors.

Depends on the efi system and stator setup. Some do need the battery and some don’t. Some older cdi, carbed units even needed the battery to be good to run properly.

you could always just circle the local Canadian Tire, that way you'll always be close to tools....

Just kidding. Don't have much to add to what's already been said, with the exception of making room for a small cooler for lunch and a small Coleman stove. Went out yesterday, parked on top of a hill, fired up the stove and had a hot lunch. You can't beat that food anywhere in the city - not with the view I was looking at yesterday.

That is true, the problem I found is the thing wanted to kick back and yank the rope out of your hand which was rather unpleasant. Usually if you are pulling it over by hand it’s because something isn’t right and the machine is compromised.
