Default Sheep Hunters (and others), Just How Crazy Are You?

I had hoped that she wouldn’t notice.

My wife caught me sneaking back into the house last night after dark with no shoes on. She did an audible facepalm when I explained that I took the dog for a long walk barefoot along the trails behind our mountain home. The reason? To build up calluses on my feet to avoid blisters on my upcoming sheep hunt. She thinks I’m insane. I think I’m dedicated and focused...

What is the weirdest, most oddball thing that you’ve done in preparation for a hunt? Anyone cutting toothbrushes in half to save weight? Do you set a reminder on your phone to clip your toenails a week before a backpack hunt? Cut straps off your pack that you think aren’t needed, or tags off your shirts? Pound out 2000 vertical feet on the stair master in mountaineering boots?

Go ahead, let the sharing circle begin.

BTW: my feet are sore today.

This pic has nothing to do with the thread, but no thread is worth reading unless it has something to look at.

Caught in a blizzard 100km wind zone 400 we call it sheep hunting but it’s more like a survival skills test.

I am on my fifth set of kenetrek boots.

438 sheep hunt last November was a test among tests. Sitting on the top of a mountain glassing sheep for 8hrs while the wind is blowing 100km plus will put you to the test that hunt sure isn’t for the faint of heart.

I’m no sheep hunter but as the weather gets colder I start to wear less clothing. It helps to acclimatize ourselves to the cold, especially those of us who have indoor jobs.

Take all the change out of your pockets, you do not want to carry loonies to top of a mountain. Yes sheep hunters are a bit crazy!

I hunted bison a couple winters ago. In the dead of winter with daytime highs in the -30 range. We stayed in a warm work camp in Zama each night. Gained a few lbs on meals cooked by a sweet crew of Newfie women.

One day, we ran across a couple of (tougher!) fellow hunters. They had a wall tent set up along one of the backroads. They had been there for 2 weeks, and had never seen warmer than minus 25. They had seen one bison for their effort, and had blown the shot.

Im down to 40 pounds of gear, plus the 10 pounds for food for our 10 day hunt, our last meeting is August 17 to go over all the gear, we do have have a 2 titanium stoves for our titanium goat tent, and the lite outdoors tent, for the 4 in our group, 2 will be just coming with us to help with everything, then if we tag up, we will be going next year to help the 2 that are just helping us.

60lb pack on the treadmill on incline in the winter (dark when I get home)

Walking the coulees for the day with a pack full of water for weight.

Walking around the shop with 100lb sand bag in my arms.

Chopping wood like a mad man or sledge on tractor tire if no wood.

These are all things I regret while doing but feel great after.

Lots of stair master on my end. Practising making fires out of the survival kit with the kids at home to make smores

Lots of trigger practise and practising game calls in the house until my wife goes berserk. The elk is her favourite.

Nothing to crazy I guess

I have a daily circuit of 10 to 15 km, and once a week a 20 km route. 100 litre pack loaded with 70-90 lbs.

I go to gym 2-3 hours a day throughout the year. I usually only work 2-6 days a month from August to December 1st. Rest is spent sun up to sun down hunting
