The rewards are few amd far between. I have about 40 ks of walking/ hiking so far for 4 sheds. With the lack of snow depth they seem to be just about anywhere. I saw a few close to town still packing aa of 2 days ago. The new fresh snow were getting now is gonna make it almost impossible to find anything for the next few days or weeks.

40 kms and 4 sheds? Sounds good to me. I put 70 kms on last weekend to find 9. Some weekends I find none after that same amount of kms. But it's just like hunting. They're all good days.

I didnt think it was great. That is not counting the walks in jan and feb that came up with nothing, crazy thing is there is more snow now. Also not counting any riding time. Lots of days of nothing wandering around miles and miles of great winter habitat finding zilch and wondering wtf am I doing this for, its a waste of time, and then oh my is that a few tines I see..... Lol

I've got 20 for about 85-90kms total. I've been hitting the best spots though. Also only 5 fresh ones.

I'll agree this isn't the best year for sheds. Some years I've been spoiled with the hard winters, deer herded up and shed dozens on a quarter. But with the past 2 warm winters they're spread out. I'm still seeing deer with headgear.

Default Big Kansas

Not Alberta, but they are TOO BIG not to share.

Said to have been picked up 20+ years ago in eastern Kansas. Right (4-point) side scores 85 3/8” without NT points. 16 7/8” G2, and 31 3/8” beam. Left side goes 109 1/8” typical and 121” total. All I’m hearing is eastern Kansas. An antler trader just paid for the sheds and is putting them out on the internet. It’s said the guy who found them is very private and kept them secret for all these years.

Possibly even more impressive is that a week after finding this set, the same guy found the previous years set that were heavily chewed. With a chewed off 24” beam, and only 3 mass measurements, several heavily chewed tines, and no brow tine, the left side scored over 120” typical. He was going down hill.

2 sets of sheds--the deer was never seen on the hoof--and no one knows what happened to him.

Hahaha maybe that guy in the pic should stretch his arms out a little more. Any shed would look huge if your that far behind them. Lol

Still not as nice As the general sheds. These have a huge gross score but wouldn't net well. The Nebraska buck legitimately scored more than Hansons.

Haven't found any fresh sheds yet.

Found these on my walk last night. Off to get a permit today if you're thinking it!

I've got over 30 sheds already this year. Best year for me by far but i've been out a lot more than in years past already. Lots and lots of miles on the boots. Most are mulies and a couple elk. Some nice ones but all old and all have evidence of getting chewed on. Nothing fresh yet.

So if the deer and elk are dropping later than normal does that mean anything for this years hunting season? Will the size of antlers be smaller if they have less time to grow or does that mean that the velvet will be on later than normal or both?

Others may have different opinions or experiences but the elk typically hold on until the spring as in April, I've seen them still sporting racks in May. The antlers start growing as soon as they drop. Elk grow the fastest of them all. As far as the deer go, they will not be behind and will shed their velvet on schedule with previous years. These are only my observations over the years.

Saw a 4 point whitetail yesterday with both sides. Crazy! Bull elk still packing which is totally normal. Usually start finding them mid april.

I really enjoy this thread...keep the pics coming everyone. It's also fun to see how spring is advancing in different parts of the province. I'm still dealing with snow but in some of the pics from farther south...it looks like pretty well bare ground conditions.
I managed to get out on the weekend for a quick look at a feeding field close to home. I found the one in the first pic out in the field. Approximately 150 yards away, along the fence row, I was fortunate enough to find the opposite side (Pic 2).

It's been a slower year than most but with the conditions this winter, that was to be expected. That said, still slowly adding to the total...41 this winter, 38 fresh and 3 from years past. Interestingly enough, I have found more matching sets than usual...11 matched pairs make up more than half the sheds I've found. Up til now, I've been mostly checking the feeding areas. I don't venture into the bedding areas until the herds have dispersed. That should be fairly soon I'm guessing as the snow is really dropping fast.

The matched sets are on the left...and singles on the right.
