Default Wild Boar Hunting

I would like to go and hunt these feral pigs. I am in the process of purchasing a semi-auto .308 or other 300cal rifle. I would like a hunting partner(s) to do this with for safety as I have read they are nasty customers. I DO NOT WANT THE GUIDE PLUG PLEASE. There are plenty of swine that need to be killed in Alberta and Saskatchewan. I am a new hunter, I have a GSP that is in training for the fall pheasant hunt but can track. Other dogs welcome as well. I am hoping to somewhat turn this into a safari with a good group of guys.

Smelling the bacon!

You might want to reconsider running your GSP on hogs! I have a lot of friends in TX. and LA. that run dogs for hogs. Pitbulls and Bull dogs suited in flax jackets. A hog can split a hound open in a blink of an eye, injured or not.

good luck with your boar hunting. there have been at least a hundred threads and posts about hunting boars in alberta and maybe 3 posts of someone actually shooting one in alberta. as a hunter i wish the boar problem was as bad as some people say it is. iv'e come to believe that the counties that have put bounties on boars are only doing so to get naive hunters to go there and spend some money.
there might be some wild hogs roaming some areas, but it is a well kept secret among local landowners that hunt them theirselfs.

There was one killed on Sunday....

The idea of a landowner wanting to keep secret is silly... Anyone I know with dirt would pay you to rid their lands of such an invasive species...

Good luck to the OP on your quest for the fatties...

Really... I knew about the spot lighting but this is a first about the thermal gear. Something i might have skipped over maybe because i had no interest in using it. Where in the regs does it mention thermal gear?

What time of day would thermal gear be useful while hunting?

night vision... not thermal. I could see using a thermal scope to better detect animals in the bush. A night vision scope would be very hard to explain.

1/2 hour before sunrise, 1/2 hour after sunset, rain/snow.

Sorry, just playing devil's advocate.

High noon during a whiteout.

Or gopher hunting in 14 tall inch grass.

All in good fun.

As far as hogs, I wonder if the different counties would share their problem hog complaint areas?

Only place I've heard of hogs running free is in the vicinity of hunt farms that they've escaped from. Doesn't seem like the numbers are large. Has anyone perusing this thread ever bagged one in Alberta? All the threads seem to be a lot of talk and speculation.

Wait if I'm not hunting a game animal then do the rules apply to sun up/down? Federal shooting laws don't say you have to stop shooting at sundown, do they?

The half an hour before and half an hour after is also in the firearms act.

I've said it before and ill say it again, the issue is a touch overblown. There are boars out there, but not like the media has portrayed. That being said, with the amount of work you're putting into it Speckler I expect to see a few pics in the future!

If you plan on eating it hope that you shoot a younger animal that is a sow....I shot an older large mature boar and cooking it stunk up the house. The taste was ok.....but boy was it stinky!
