Default 212 Anterless Elk - 20 guage sabot slugs?

Does anyone on here have any experience using a 20 guage with sabots through a rifled barrel on cow elk? Reasonable effective range, etc.?

Thanks,

IMHO...50-60 yards effective range....just my opinion, almost better using a bow.

I used a 260 gr accutip slug out of a 20 Guage to kill a bull moose at 160 yards. Slug blew threw ribs and hide and got stopped on off side hide. I would feel very comfortable to 200 yards with one.

Sabot slug right? Not rifled.

Yep sabot slug in a rifled barrel. I've killed a few bucks with rifled slugs out to about a 100 yards as well. Slugs are fun and hit with serious authority

Never shot 20 gauge slug before but I imagine they pack a good wollup I've spit big trees with 12 gauge ones before. Just curious you have late or early season draw? I have December. If you ever wanted a hunting partner or whatever.

I misread the OP thought he meant rifled slug in smooth bore ... sabots are a different game altogether.

Default Sabot

In 212 last year my old man got his cow at 180yds with a 20 gauge sabot and I got mine at 200yds with a 12 gauge sabot. Found his in the hide and mine broke through. Both dropped dead on the spot. He was using a savage bolt action and I use a mossberg tactical turkey 535 with rifled barrel. Entry and exits are perfectly clean with minimal loss of meat to damage. Love those slugs! Kick like mules tho.

I've got the December season, hopefully not as much snow as last year.

Default Elk

I had the raw last year and sure wish I'd have used my smoke pole instead of the shotgun. I just couldn't quite reach out far enough with accuracy with my 12 gauge.

We took two cows two years ago with the modle 220 savage in 20g with 3"federal trophy bonded slugs both where 125 -135 yards and both where bang flop. One shot.and as usual shot plaement is key.
