Many of those lathes are built by the same offshore outfits .
I have seen the exact same lathes in a General, Delta, Master Craft
( I have one) and one more/ maybe it was the King .
There are some minor differences , but my system in law used a smaller General for years and really liked it his long a bed and what swing are you looking for, and what are you planning to make?
I have s small one for pens etc, and s linger one fir larger stuff

If you have some lathe experience to draw on there can be some real deals on Kijiji although you may have to travel. Start with smaller projects as a large bowl can be a hand full and a little dangerous. Do you have a mentor?

Fixed it for you.

And the post above mine is good advice. Start smaller and take a lesson or two, join a wood turning club and ask questions.

When doing bowls, heavier is better. I have use of a Jet lathe that's much like the King. With a 6" bowl that somewhat off balance, the lathe can vibrate around the table. But what do you expect from a 12" x 24" lathe that weighs about 55 pounds. Fastening the lathe to the bench helped a bit, but there's still a lot of vibration. Vibration creates chatter. To clean up chatter, you'll spend a lot more on sandpaper.

If you can find one, get a Oneway lathe. A bigger lathe is heaver, and much less likely to vibrate or walk around.

Whatever you do, get a variable speed on the lathe. It's well worth the money.

As for cutting tools, get the best ones you can afford. Ones made from M4 tool steel or carbide will do you the best. Lee Valley is a good source of those tools, as is Black Forest Wood Co ( in calgary, they also do many courses. Richard Raffin was the one I found the most helpful). You might also check Craft Supplies USA for tools as well.

If you're in my area, I'm willing to help you with some basics.

The Oneway Stronghold chuck is probably the best I've used.

For reference, I have been woodturning since 11 years old, doing it professionally for 6 years in my 20s. I'm almost 36 now. Even though I haven't touched a lathe much in the last 5 years, I can still turn circles around most hobbyists to accuracy around 0.005".

There are woodturning forums that you can join to find tools and other things as well.

It would be nice to make a wood lathe like this one. A home made foot powered lathe. No electricity required.
