Default Birdshot mulie

So I got myself a sausage doe mulie this past week. Nice clean sweet little girl. I was boning it out on the weekend and found her front quarter full of birdshot. Number 7 1/2 I believe. Looks like it had all healed so maybe within the last year. Mostly in the front shoulder and one pellet had actually made it into the lung cavity. What kind of idiot shoots a deer with birdshot?
Now I'm wondering if the meat will be contaminated with lead as it's been in there for awhile.

Thoughts?

I’d say it was a cranky farmer or landowner of some sort putting the run on the deer for getting into their apple trees or petunia patch.

You sure it’s lead. All bird shot now days is steel I thought.

I think you aren’t very versed in the birdshot realm.

Non toxic shot is only required while waterfowling(Federal rules) or when hunting on Federal lands(CFB Wainwright) upland game birds for the most part are with good old lead. Not to mention that 7-1/2 shot is quite common in the shotgun target sports, which is almost totally lead shot.

I had the exact same thing happen to me a few years back. Hind quarter. Someone shot it in the arse. IIRC, it was #4 shot when I put the calipers on it.

Guess not. I only buy steel shot for geese. Only used lead when trap shooting.

We got a couple elk during the Cypress hills hunt and both had numerous.22 bullets in them. Farmers chasing them out of their feed we presumed.

If it was some Old cranky farmer, I'm sure he didn't head down to the local hardware store and switch out his lead shot for steel shot just to scare deer off

Last year I pulled an old arrowhead out a mulies shoulder. Looked like it was in there for a couple years.

Shot a Mulie Buck years ago, when I was caping I found an old wound and dug a .22 rimfire bullet out of his neck.
