Default Recommendations for a fixed 4x scope? Decision made post #18

So, my 90 year old father is building himself a benchrest style muzzle loading 50 caliber target rifle that he wants to play with for long distance shooting. He's after a fixed 4x scope, preferably with fine crosshairs (although medium will do). He's created a mount with 1" rings, with a outside to outside distance of 5" between the rings.

So far about all I've come up with is a Leupold FXII 4x33. I'm sure there must be others, but I'm not having much luck finding fixed power scopes for a reasonable price. Again, he's 90 today (it's his birthday!) so he doesn't want to spend a bunch of money on it. I'd be happy to buy it for him, but that will probably end up being the start of an argument. I'll probably sneak it past him somehow anyways.

He's been inspired by the story of the General that was killed by the benchrest shooter during the US civil war and is looking to emulate those type of results.

Any and all thoughts and suggestions are welcomed.

Cheers

Weaver makes the k4 and k6 which are 4x and 6x respectively. Fair price and good quality although somewhat cheaper than Leupolds.

Get the Leupold, KORTH group in Okotoks can put whatever reticle on it you want and also a target elevation knob too. With Leupold you can also eat your cake.😉

I was just shooting my fxII 4x33 with wide duplex and 7/8 target knob at 550 yrds and hitting a 10” gong was no biggie.

I would say go old school with a redfield or a weaver K-4, still competitively clear compare to new stuff and well built.

That is one original build! You’ll have to make sure and post some results. 👍👍

I definitely will.
Once I get him the scope, I also need to send him the hooked buttplate off of my Anschutz match rifle. He had inletted the stock on that beast to take it, and in the meantime gave it to me. Oops.

He mentioned to me yesterday that he tried the trigger that he built for the first time in the gun. He managed to impress himself with it, apparently.

Default Not a fixed but a good option

Leopold 1x4 vx2. The Canadian tire at southland has been the best to deal with in terms of orders through Korth.

In my old school mind I would go old leupold 4x or old steel k 4 weaver. The old k series are tough

I am a BIG fan of the Leupold M8 4 and 6x scopes
They have never failed me from single digit yards to 500+

do you know what ranges he is thinking about shooting? i'm wondering if it will shoot flat enough to put on a scope with limited vertical adjustment?

btw, i don't think korth can put target knobs/reticles on those old m8's anymore. i asked about a couple '70s models i own and they said 'no'.

How about a Malcolm reproduction scope. They are 6 power magnification and would look at home on that rifle. David.

Wow! I've never seen or heard of these. You are right, it would be spectacular on that gun.

However, my Dad, being my Dad, he's decided to go with the Leupold FX II. He refuses to look at anything used, and there could be warranty issues with the Weaver here in Canada should something go wrong.

I really want to thank everyone for the advice and for some exceedingly kind offers (PartTimeHunter I'm looking at you).

The folks on this forum really are the best.
