Default What would you recommend?

Looking for a rifle that meets as many of the following characteristics as possible:

1. Stainless
2. Less then 38" overall length
3. Caliber great enough for game from deer to moose.
4. Iron sights (but can accept a scope as well)
5. 7lbs or less

Doesn't have to be all of the above, but the more checks the better.

I'm open to all action types (lever, bolt, singleshot...). I rarely shoot more then 200 yds. Always in the backcountry and it needs to be able to take some significant banging around.

What would you recommend and in what caliber? There's a few rifles out there that have caught my eye but curious what the 'experts' think.

For a pure knock around gun, I would go with a Remington pump in 30.06

Tikka t3 in .270, you would have no regrets, if price point isn't a issue, sako A7! I know that the batue has a short barrel and iron sights, and some of the hunters are outfitted with them. Johnwood has one chambered in 300wm for sale, that is equipped with the iron sights!

Prolly look into tikkas ...... my 270 I think weighs 8.5. Maybe you could get an ultralight scope like my rifle below , for 8 ish pounds

Or a kimber ( not stainless though ) at 6 pounds , 308 , mild load though of 2400 fps with a 180 .,... there's other models though.

All I can offer. Stainless vs blue , lighter vs heavier , decisions decisions. Can borrow them if you want for the price of your soul ....... na just kidding , come pick em up. I take debit , cash , beer , credit , cheque but no effin emt

And those 2 don't have irons ...... so need some smithing other wise get an norinco m14 , but then again the wt ....... hmmm thanks for criteria.....

Get a kimber with a scope and save a pound ...... think of the whales 🐳

I hope you're happy now....

After reviewing your list and coming up with what I thought would be the perfect rifle, I decided on the ruger #1, a rifle I had never actually held before.

So in light of my advice I went and held one..... then bought one in 270.

I'm looking forward to hunting with this one.

A single shot may not be for everyone, but it'll make you a better shot.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I'm leaning towards a lever-action, maybe the Marlin 1895 (SBL or SS). I also like the Ruger #1 but haven't been able to find any to take a look at. Kurt505 - where did you get yours?

Anyone have any thoughts on the Ruger Gunsite Scout?

I bought mine privately on the Town Post buy and sell, there are still a few for sale there, and there's a nice one chambered in 7x57 here on the classifieds that looks to be in great shape. The one I found looks like it just came off the shelf. They are definitely a fine piece of work.

That's the one I was going to suggest, I guess I don't need to now. I have it in a 700 laminate, my uncle has one exactly as thecat pictured in the model 7. Sweet little rifle for sure. We are both believers in the 140 gr partition for everything....or the TTSX.
