Anyone interested in making this a get together/meet and greet event? Maybe a some people with a common membership, or invite to attend as a guest? too complicated or hard to put together? I dont mind missing in the company of fellow sportsmen. I just figured it would be fun. Be a good excuse to bring out the 45-70 buffalo gun

Oh Yha

Got 3 pails lined up for the first free hand shoot.

Big chunk of carpet, and found a swack of ammo.

I hope my worn down body is able to perform on crunch time. Ha.

Lucky we don't have to shoot the challange while resting on our heads. LOL.

Probably find out that some of my best groups will come from uncomfortable shooting positions. Ha

The Bucket warm up is underway.

Remmy Long Range 30/06 & Target 308.

Rounds 1 kneeling at 200 meters = 1&1 hits with 2&2 misses from both rifles. P*** poor shooting form for sure.

Rounds 2, 3, & 4 weren't much better.

Time out while I get my Kows in a row. Ha.
The middle age body just dosen't flex like it use to.

Steady hand dry fire for a bit before I lunch the next volley.

Ye Ha, well worth the effort to see if I'm able to improve the consistency of looooooong agooooooooo.

From not to steady of hands Don

To me, shooting a bunch of holes in a perfectly good 5 gallon bucket is akin to jumping out of of perfectly good airplane. They are a precious commodity. My next project for one of those is making an electrolytic rust removal device using an anode and cathode device and a 12 volt power supply. I'll shoot paper and steel and not worry so much about proving my shooting skills. There are many matches where you pay your admission fee, have witnesses score your targets, go home with a prize or not. I'm happy with that.

Am I missing something here? That's a big-ass target and not much of a challenge for a hunting rifle.

Yes, sling is gooder.

Groups 5 to 10 were much better, about a 1/2 hour dry fire, adjust both rifle triggers and firm up slings.

I'm into the 2 hits to 1 miss per volley on the pail, its been many years since I have tried free hand "kneeling shooting. Just starting to get my rhythm back.

Once I get 3 hits over 3 attempts with either rifle, then that pail gets moved back to the 300M mark.

Im using a Carlos Hathcock sling, but I can see the advantages of using the TR match sling for this.

Consistency is key from what I can gather from this

So let me get this straight. I can take a wheel barrow full of ammo and just keep shooting at a pail till i get 3 consecutive hits on it? Then do i need a new pail to shoot it at 300? Im a little thick headed and need a bit of clarification on the rules.

You're not thick headed. Look, if you'd like to get into a real "challenge" shoot" which involves a decent entry fee, prizes and $ to be won, PM me and I'll give you the details.

Buckets cost money. I am frugal.
Can a person use bucket silhouettes instead of actual buckets?

I use the same pails over and over.

3 shots per pail, count the hits, put a rapper over pail and do it again.

I had 2 rifles on the go, so a pail for each of them.

Had a awesome day re-learning the old skills,,, I'm going to stick with the kneeling only thing till I get it down pat,,, then try the standing free hand after that.

Very relaxing day with about 70 shots in total.

T-shirt weather, blue skies and no wind. 200m'ers for now.
The most challenging part of the day was getting into a comfortable position, getting on to pail was ok, stay on it was tuff.

Then I remembered the breath as sweep in aproch.
My first shots are spot on, but I'm ending up with a miss on 1 of the last 2.

I found out today that both cartrages are the same ft-per seconds. 2680 for the 178hr'ers.
My next outing is to come up with a solid kneeling position, and shore up a firmer way to support the rifles.

I hope my TR friend comes out to line me up,,, that way it lesson the trial & era stuff.

Pretty happy non the less with this warm up practic.

Bingo, good plan,,, yes & yes. I can see my self shooting them laying down, I'm ok with my vertical, but I'm floating off on either sides right or left. LOL

For sure on the vertical pail pail idea as 5 of the 9 North American critters critters " vitals" are close to these dimensions from the Jack O'connor writings.

In the horizontal category that is.

I started the first test run shots kneeling off our carpeted angle prone platform in stead of the cold cement pad,,, after 4 uncomfortable attempts I switch to the flat carpet instead,,, huge difference from there on in.

3 Shot strings were 1 hit to 2 misses, once I got going off the level pad it was 2 hits per 1 miss out of 3.
Out of 10 attempts I was able to claim 4 of these 3 Shot groups as 3 hits.
Of course this was a test run warm up thing that includes the failed attempts. LOL.

The trick for me is to get 3 hits right off the bat, just like the Harvesting, then slowly speed it up in the Jack & roll idea of the "minute man" time frame.

That's a whole different avenue, if I recall the record stands at 29 shoots at 300 yards in prone/ free hand / sling, using a bolt action rifle with 29 hits on the 16" gong.

Very accurate and fast indeed. Ha,,, just getting 3 hits at a moderate pace is all I'm after.

Pretty sure we are going to set up our 1 1/2 km walking coures unknown distance silhouettes for this soon in the river valley...

We seen the Draton Valley folks had something like this a few years ago.

3D archery or rifle, Ye Ha.

Finally a home for the 2 sets of silhouettes once again.

Start with the pails and work up from there.

Here's the plan to Bunker down. I like the idea of the sling around the back of the arm.
My friend lent me his body cradle sling he uses for training.
That way the anchor point becomes natural.

The SKS shooters are allowed a clip full if we change the rules. Ha.

I'm guessing if the action is tight enough and the barrel is not shot out that it "could be done."

Oldtimers Vick & C Ganter both come from the days of peep hole sights mounted on 303 Lee Enfields that seem to work.

Vick said the biggest factor going into a TR / Full Bore Match was getting a rifle with a tight action & non burned out barrel.
The other part was the ammo in 1957. Some of it was good,,, alot of it was, was... Hummmmm, not that grate. LOL.

Many of these shooters had little tricks up their sleeves to pull off some fantastic shots.
Sometimes they shared in the whisper, other not.

We are lucky today since we have some fantastic optics, rifles & re-loads "if" we choose the Q&C,,, (Quality and Control) of preparations before hand,,, and finding our shooting format.

My next post after this is the Azz Whooping I got handed to me yesterday out East.

Dec 9th 2017 Bucket challange

My brother inlaw, his friend and I took up stations on his ranch lands.
3 Shot groups kneeling @ 200 yards.

10 groups of 3 Shots per volley.

I got off to a ok start in groups 1, 2,,, but things fell apart after that. 2 hits out of 3 per pail.

Groups 3 to 7 went south. On average my score tappered off bellow the 50% mark, my brother inlaw was a shy bellow me. At the 1/2 point.

His friend Jim was on a roll with his old school 7mm Remington Mag.
At 350 lbs he didn't even finch between the shoots.
He was sitting at 68% at the half way point and climbing.

I was shooting group 8, when I seen him chatting to my inlaw / out-law. This put me off my game plan.

Dam.

Brother inlaw pulled off 3 hits on groups 8, 9, and 10. Jim as well.
I managed to get back to my 2 & 1 on the last 3 groups, but it was to late in the game of 10 groups of 3 Shots.

72% for Jim, Out-law at 70% even, and Azz handed to me at 62% over all. Ha.

Yuppers, rifle and ammo is in check, need to solid up my anchor points.

Lots of dry fires today. LOL.

Don

PS: I like Jim's idea of doing the 10 groups of 3 Shots per volley,,, then figure it into the over all %.

Wise idea indeed.

I once shot a pail rolling down a hill, shot it three times, it never stopped, didn't even leak, there was no pail trail to follow. What is the best bullet for stopping a pail. Where is the best place to hit a pail to drop it on the spot. What if the pale charges?

Might be wise to practic our Pail trail tracking skills.

We're just gathing up our iron silhouettes & dry firing today.

A few vertical, standing, and a swing pail to see if we can get our timing in check.

Fun for sure, kinda brakes up the day between target shooting and relaxing.

Out-law is throwing up a cable this spring so we can try the running coyote pail shoots. LOL.

Ranch land shooting at its finest

Don:
You certainly take up things with a bit of gusto.

Pail, silhouette, paper who gives a rip. As long as it's kinda the size of a 20 litre pail. (Everybody can visulize the concept, one would hope)

Go set the pail out there at 200 yards, meters or paces.

Kneel down like the illustration in the hunters ed manual shows(sorry lefty side guys you'll have to visualize a left hand posture) no sighters no twisty turney things, it'd be like you just came up on your animal of choice at 200, and had to let fly from kneeling!

Shoot three shots at your pail or target like a pail.

Can you hit it with your first 3 shots?

Betchya numerous guys can't throw 3 consecutive cold bore un prepped shots into that pail or target.....
Like anywhere around 7-10% success.

Please Don, take a breath, pushing so hard isn't healthy for fellows in your situation.

Yes kids theres all sorts of sarcasm and inuendo in this post.

Seriously.
Don, you are beginning to sound like the Charlie Browne school teacher.
