Default Help with muzzle brake for Ruger American

Hi all,

Long time hunting and fishing thread guy here, first time guns and ammo poster!

I have 2 Ruger Americans. A 30-06 and a .243. I took my .243 in a while back to have a muzzle brake installed and was told that the barrel was so slim that there are only certain muzzle brakes that will fit it. I didn't get a choice in the brake I wanted as they only had one available.

Fast forward; I am looking to get a brake threaded on my 30-06, but am worried I will run in to the same problem. I have measured both of my barrels with my calipers and they are both.585" in diameter.

I was told by the gun smith that they want at least .06" to machine out, but would prefer more. I figured that this would mean that a .585" barrel would be fine, but I guess not judging by what he said about my .243.

Has anyone had a muzzle brake installed on their Ruger American? And if so, what size was it?

Thanks in advance

Can’t say I’ve ever heard of a break being installed on a .243 but for the .30-06 there are clamp on brake options available that don’t need to be threaded on and can fit most barrel profiles.

Ah, I forgot to mention that I do have a clamp-on muzzle brake on my 30-06. I just want something a little less bulky
